spring semester, sophomore year of college is the hardest thing ever.  it seems to be true for me too and not just academically.

anyone else have any anecdotes that fall into this shamefully depressive category?

I'm in the spring semester of my sophomore year too!  cool!

it has been pretty rough, schoolwise, but is much better life-wise.

let's see.  If it makes you feel any better, I just got $300 today!

I'm also very happy cause I got accepted into the upper division writing classes (I had to submit for acceptance.)

both those happened today, so, actually, I'm pretty super jacked right now.

and if misfortune will cheer you up:  I'm not getting any.
eh.  I tried.  Will think of more later.

That semester I had just switched from Engineering to English, I only had classes two days a week, and my GPA went from 2.9 to a 4.0.  With my 4-day weekends, I often took the train to Chicago.  On the other day off, I would play Dynasty Warriors 2 all day.  God college ruled.

goddamn, i never thought about it, but that's dead on. i got kicked out of school my second semester of sophomore year, but not before getting busted in the dorms for pot, getting a public intox ticket (though i was in an automobile at the time), voluntarily committing myself to a psych ward, and moving to minneapolis from iowa during courses (after two months of not showing up the school contacted my parents and officially expelled me).

but that's not to say it's all bad. i took a couple years off school, played in bands, and eventually returned to school (graduating from the place that dumped me in the first place). now i work as a counselor in a treatment program for mentally il substance abusers. poetic justice, methinks.

sometimes i think it's just that 19 or 20 can be a vulnerable age, emotionally and socially. if school seems insurmountable when placed atop everything else that is going on, leave for a bit. you can always return. if the stress is manageable and you've thought out your schooling extensively, stick it out. sounds cheesy, but it will get better. with the benefit of hindsight, i can say that those years were my most emotionally charged, for better and worse. don't make any snap judgments and always value your health. sorry to bust into parent mode, but this topic is pretty close to my heart.

good luck

my mom always said that the twenties were the most dramatic times of her life.  Everything is TERRIBLE and AWFUL and AMAZING and PERFECT followed by PURE AGONY.   which is exactly how I feel.  things have been incredibly unstable for a month(going from bad to awesome back to bad) concerning health, living arrangements, roommates, school, and worst of all the boyfriend moving away.  so tragic(sarcasm), I know, but it's hard not to live right down in these swealtering extremes.
I'd like to do something corny and quote JD in the liner notes of Tallahassee:

"in our lives together, which are sweet in the way of rotting things, it is somehow permanently summer."

in a week I'll read this post and laugh, then feel a little embarrassed, then read about the new pope or jens leckman.

nati that is incredible.  you are wonder woman.  I'ma go be grateful for my place to rest my hat now.

part of my sophomore problems was the danger of becoming homeless but since I never was it's not even on the woe is me radar.

don't you love it when your problems don't seem so bad.  I was blessed with enormous perspective on life.  Either that or unshakeable apathy.

I would be in my second semester sophomore year right now, but I dropped out in January.

So I guess it's true, or something's true, anyway.

i started college at 16 so my sophomore year was i had just turned 18 and moved to nyc where i knew no one and lived with 7 strangers (no, i was not on the real world!).

it was tough.  but i thought the first semester was hardest.  then again i had a new city to deal with.  i was also BROKE.  i worked, had an internship and took 16-18 credits.  i must say, time did fly by.

the best part is once you're done.  does that give you incentive?  and once you're done you'll be like "oh, that was it?" it's strange how that works.
