Yay for buying Nabokov books!  I think the last time I read Pale Fire it was after I coughed up the $2 for a second, reference copy.

And I loved Tropic of Cancer but I've never read Tropic of Capricorn (or Black Spring, or any other Miller) because I've heard bad things.  Are they true?

I have managed to be a good boy and not buy any books for quite some time but I've got a good stock of books to go through (which is why I'm trying not to buy anything new.)

I am going to start The Resusciation of a Hanged Man by Denis Johnson shortly (it was that one and The Name of the World that I had sitting in my room untouched.)

"The Shifting Realities of Phillip K. Dick: Selected Literary and Philosophical Writtings" by Phillip K. Dick

"Tolkien: A Look Behind the Lord of the Rings" by Lin Carter
"From Stills to Motion and Back Again: Texts on Andy Warhol's Screen Tests & Outer and Inner Space"

I've been wanting the first one for a while, and the other two were on sale so I bought them for the hell of it. The Tolkien one seems sorta lame though, because when I was flipping through it she was talking about how her "discovery" that Tolkien ripped of the dwarves names fromt he Elder Edda totally blew her away. I "disovered" that two years back, and I didn't write a flipping book about it. I really just bought the Warhol one for the hell of it, because I both hate and am deeply fascinated by andy warhol. Studying that man is like looking at a train wreck.

Books Bought this Weekend:
E.L. Doctorow - Ragtime
William Hazlitt - On The Pleasure of Hating.
Jeffrey Eugenides - The Virgin Suicides
Tobias Wolff - Old School
Jostein Gaarder - Sophie's World
Voltaire - Candide
C.S. Lewis - The Weight of Glory
Anne Lamott - Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith

I think that's all of 'em.  It was a pretty good weekend for books.

well, i read "tropic of capricorn" first, and really liked it. there was real literary talent and inspiration there, even though it was mostly about sex. but then "tropic of cancer" seemed to me to be a lot more simplified, less inspired and more just a straight-up pervert's travelogue. i like "capricorn" (and "black spring", which i read third) better.

also, moloko, i envy you that copy of "portnoy's complaint". i really want to read that book, but can't find it used and don't want to pay for it new.

p.s.--jack chimney, lin carter was a dude.

i don't do libraries. i always forget to return the books and get billed $40 or some ungodly amount.

and i don't do ebay because 1) auction sites are lame, esp. when i can use a fixed-price site like abebooks, and 2) i don't have a credit card (though, in fairness, i'm allowed to use my store's card to order books for myself).

Fuck, you're right! I was actually not "LETTING" them read stuff! I was physically preventing them from reading their beloved books by taping their eyelids shut. "LET." Who said anything about not "letting" people read anything?

you're taste is so much more refined.  we get it.

yeah, dude, that's totally my point. why would I listen to someone who insists on interpreting my every post in as reductive & crude a way possible? did it ever occur to you that people might have other motives for expressing disdain than a) self-promotion or b) hatred of others?

shit, if I was like that I'd tell you to spell "your" correctly.

& why aren't you LETTING me post what I want?? I'm being oppressed!

tell you what: why don't you just skip over every post w/ my name on it, & I'll just assume that if you'd read it you would've posted some pointless screed about what an asshole I am. yr interpretation of my posts is boring & predictable & requires you to expend zero thought. if the only reason I post is to show a bunch of nobodies that I'll never meet how "refined" I am, well, that's pretty fucking sad, & you shld just feel sorry for me. just maybe it's possible, though, that I'm including myself among the nobodies & not assuming that any one of them (except you) takes what I'm saying as deriving from any particular fucking authority.

The way to start a conversation about something is not to shout "X sucks!"  Or "People who read X are all Y."   When you do that, people are more likely to think that you're just a fucking cunt than ask you why you think that.

Yeah, seriously.  Why are you here, then?  It's not to show anyone how refined your tastes are, it's not to start a conversation or discuss things.  Tell me, really, I want to know.  Why are you here?
