So, how universally required is two weeks notice for a job?
Would one week's notice suffice if:

1)  It's a shitty retail job
2)  You've turned in your letter of resignation stating one week's notice to the owner and it's been accepted.
3)  The person there who thinks she's your boss but isn't is now saying you have to stay two weeks, and it's precisely because of shit like this that you're leaving.
4)  They fired three people right before Christmas, and those people sure as hell didn't get any advance notice.
5)  You don't really care about the reference as you have witnessed first hand the people at this establishment talking shit about / ACTIVELY SABOTAGING THE CAREERS of good, talented former employees.

They have, however, recently been relatively good about giving flexible scheduling/time off, though 3) still came into play a little bit.

So the options are:
1)  Be the bigger person and work the extra week, even though it will be a minor-to-medium career inconvience.

2)  FUCK ALL YOU BITCHES THE ONLY WAY I'LL BE HERE NEXT WEEK IS IF YOU SHOOT ME AND DRAG MY CORPSE HERE, AND ALL ATTEMPTS AT NECROMANCY FAIL!

Which is the proper course?  I should note, mainly to FreddyKnuckles, that this is for my gf, not me, though obviously I feel quite strongly about this, since mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy, etc.

everyone that put in a 2 weeks notice at my work only worked a day extra or so, because my boss gives everyone but me special treatment. so when i put in my 2 weeks in soon, i'm going to be like "see ya later, bitchessssss!" -- but i'd say it all depends on if she's already got another job lined up or not.

if they already said "cool" and now they've changed their minds and/or somebody sub-admin wants to flex nuts and claim you have to stay extra time, then it's your choice. In my opinion: if they came at you with any take besides "it'd be a real help to us if you stayed an extra week, we'd really appreciate it," then to hell with 'em. BUT. Smile when you say it. "I really value my time here, but I told my new job my start date would be thus-and-such,. and when I turned in my letter of resig I made that known, so I'm real sorry I can't be of more help."

yeah I'd probably say fuck them, right in the ear.

I figured you weren't talking about you, because I was pretty certain you weren't in retail.

does she have anything else lined up?

make out with the girl who thinks you're her subordinate. she obviously has mad sexual tension towards you. regardless of gender.

edit: right before you leave, of course. do not stay for the additional week.

Every time I've treated people with professional courtesy so as not to burn any bridges, I've regretted it. In my experience, it's always been management against staff and staff get screwed if they hold still for it. So I'm afraid I'm going to have to vote in favor of option 2, though it seems foolish and petulant. I wouldn't be up to it, myself. I'd probably leave quietly & politely rather than with a richly-deserved double-fuck-you.

Bernard, there's always the satisfaction, years in the future, of knowing you took the high road - this is a delayed-gratification strategy, of course, but take my word for it: the reward is considerable.

This whole situation just seems like a poisonous one, to me. If she doesn't need the reference, I would just say get out, and don't look back; no grand gestures, but no bending over backwards to accomodate them either. Just get out as soon as possible, say, 'Sorry, gotta jet. Nope, can't do it.' and end the association.

I actually just quit the job I'd held for the second-longest time ever, because my bosses would show up for work up to an hour late, leaving me to freeze my ass off in the cold rain.

I told them they could consider it two weeks notice, and I then requested (with reasons, mind you) every day I was working for the next two weeks off. Worked out well.

Alternately, you could just take Maaik's suggestion and do the milly.

Yeah, this is basically the plan.  She's gonna say, "If you have a replacement here for me to train by the end of the week, then I'll stay another week and train them, if not, there's no point in staying an extra week."  This is knowing full well of course, that the owner has had a stack of untouched resumes for a different position for six months.  Haha, deviance!

EDIT:  Also Freddy, yeah, she has a ton of freelance jobs lined up for this summer, that pay way better than this job, and another job she already works on her day off.  At the rate things are going, she's probably going to be self-employed-work-from-home at 24, which is pretty sweet.

Is that really any better than me?  I stayed up watching a bootleg of Episode 3 and trying to record my blasted song for the LPTJ Covers album.

Yeah, maybe mine is better.  I still need a job.

Yes, yes, yes; I am powered by insanely huge reserves of self-righteousness, due to choices like this.  Or, if you're less arrogant than I am, you could view it as a "moral" choice.  Either way is cool, I guess.

So she is going to work the extra week.  She found out later that if she had refused, the owner was going to CALL UP the owner of other place she works solely to put in a bad word.  Even though when she resigned, she handed him the letter, told him he had one week, asked if had any questions or concerns.  He said no.  What a DICK!

They really wouldn't want to start shit like that, though, she has sooooooo much dirt on them.

this is illegal. If she's up for a fight (no one ever is, American workers are total cowards about this sort of thing, myself included), she could punish them severely for this.

We actually thought about this, especially since the owner comes from money, but meh.  It's very possible that she's gonna get together with a couple other former employees and draft an angry letter to corporate, 'cause they hate him anyway and he's thiiiiiis close to losing his franchise license.

Don't be "meh" about it. That's the cowardice. Honestly, if you really do fight them on it, there's a good chance they'll think twice before doing it ever again.

And, you'll have a little rent money.

Karma:

They got raided by the Illinois Department of Revenue yesterday and were cited for:

1)  Having merchandise for sale on the sidewalk in front of their store without a proper permit.

2)  Operating on an expired business license.

3)  Back taxes.

Hahahahahahahaha!
