As for V., she recognized--perhaps aware of her own progression toward inanimateness--the fetish of M/(c)lanie and the fetish of herself to be one. As all inanimate objects, to one victimized by them, are alike.

Andrew's right about this stuff. Cold hard fact: trying to be friends with people who are toxic to you is a doomed enterprise. It doesn't matter how good you feel when you're with them. It doesn't matter how bad it hurts to make the break. Attempting to negotiate with a toxin will drive you insane. If it's any consolation, people do change, so you can try talking to them again five or ten years later, and that'll be nice. (I have had this happen twice.) But the "I can't live without this person's friendship" thing, no, e'eybody gotta kick that to the curb. Yes you can. You'll just hurt real bad for a while.
