I'm in this phase that hits about once every two or three years where all I can listen to are Nico's "the Marble Index" and Syd Barrett's "Barrett"

I'm not sure I can say they're my two favorite albums ever, but they certainly do something really awesome for me, especially when i hear them together.

This evening:

The Sun - Blame it on the Youth (along with 1999 and Ohio Tigers and the EPs)

Fugazi - Steady Diet of Nothing

Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch

And, now:

The Fall - Grotesque (After the Gramme)

I heart the Dandy Warhols.  And the Weakerthans.  And I need to get more Okkervil River.  And, after looking up that Erin McKeown album I think I'm gonna listen to that next instead of The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall.  I probably shouldn't stay up long enough to listen to all of either.[/img]

i've been digging in the crates tonight, playing some old stuff i've had forever and haven't heard in years. it all started with my reading "the replacements' 'let it be' " by colin meloy and getting that album out and playing it three times in a row. then he mentioned husker du's "candy apple grey", so i had to get that out and play it too. from there, it went like this:

bob mould - black sheets of rain
elvis costello and the attractions - get happy!!
echo and the bunnymen - porcupine
the flaming lips - transmissions from the satellite heart

crazy. i might put on a game theory lp next.

You know, I held out for almost a month.

Modern Life is War - Witness

Holy shit, my favorite hardcore album ever right now.

Peter Tosh - Legalize It

Now I have been in a pretty broody and dark state of mind for a while and so I've been hearing this album in a different light. It's got dark edges, man. It's frustration breaking out, it's a voice being heard, it's not a dark masterpiece or any of that dredge... but it's got something that really fucking speaks to me right now... I can't quite put a finger on it... but this is quite distanced from Bob Marley's solo shit. There's a density to this art.

since reading "rip it up and start again", i've been playing a lot of early 80s postpunk stuff. to wit:

public image ltd - metal box, paris au printemps, self-titled aka first edition
james chance and the contortions - buy the contortions
no new york (esp. the james chance tracks)
mission of burma - vs.
talking heads - the name of this band is talking heads
the fall - 50,000 fall fans can't be wrong
aztec camera - high land, hard rain
orange juice - [can't remember the name, compilation of early recordings]
joy division - unknown pleasures
new order - substance disc 1 (my first real listen to new order--i like a lot of these songs, but the versions on this cd are too damn long)

other stuff i've been playing a lot lately:

fela kuti - mix cd a friend of mine made for me
prince - 3121
mclusky - mclusky do dallas
gospel - the moon is a dead world

so yeah.
