.....and it was good, as usual, but it seems like every time i see him play it never compares to when i saw him in 2001 when his bass player played some crazy bass-yet-many-high-strings thing, with no frets. the guy was going at it with both hands, tapping style, and it blew me away. so much so that i slapped the guy's ass on my way out after the show while saying something to the effect of "nice playing there man" or something equally as generic.
but the man fucking rocked whatever it was that he played. anyone know what the hell that bass-like instrument was?
and anyone wish jv still did "keep the dream alive" all mellow-like? rocking it out with the horn samples instead of a simple guitar melody in place of the horns makes me wish horribly for that which once was.....
new songs, especially "trance manual," sounded great live. and it was fabulous to hear "up above the sea."

when i saw JV at the echo lounge in atlanta a few years ago, it was all chris mcguire. it was the chris mcguire show. he was entranced, i was enraptured.
before or since, i have seen few drummers as exciting.

I was at the show at the Doug Fir in Portland too. Great show. Really great venue too. I had never been to the place before, but the room sounded great and had a very cool vibe. Even JV commented on it. I'm definately keeping a closer eye on their schedule from now on...

yeah, it took me a few shows there for the place to grow on me, but the sound is great and i'm finally used to the hipster log cabin motif....plus i get a kick out of laughing in my head at the folks in the bar upstairs.

Hahaha I was stinking there!
Ahem.
I saw him again in Athens not too long after that show, opening for Jets to Brazil, and Chris Mcguire was again his drummer and again the show was not to be trifled with! At that second one, Mcguire was even in some sort of Eastern formal wear.

Holy crap. I've never actually seen anyone play a Chapman Stick. That's awesome.

Was that the fall of 2002? That's the only time I've seen Vanderslice, and the drummer was pretty much unbelievable. A show review I wrote at the time contained the phrase "walked on water."

yep, that sounds right.
i took one look at his kit, with the amazingly high cymbals, the single tom, the two snares (am i getting this right?)...and laughed.
when he started playing, i stopped laughing.

Holy Christ, three future LPTJers in attendance at the same show. That's damn rockin. Watching Mac play drums
was
the fucking show. I loved how he kept changing his cymbals out between songs, keeping his tiny kit lean and mean (I was talking to my friend about it up front before the show, pointing at it like "that's the size kick drum I want" or something and he came up to me like "are you laughing at my baby?" No sir, I was not).
That's really funny that all three of us were at that show.

Ahhahaha again! I'm there on the right without a face in a green shirt. Who's that fellow of the Asian Persuasion(which is the best rhyme in the whole wide world, by the way), I wonder.
(fygmynt i dont know what you look like so you should probably point yourself out and add to the hilarity.)

HOLY FUCKING SHIT THAT IS AWESOME!
Yeah, that's totally me like right the fuck up front. I am flanked by my friends Crissee and Derick (who look kinda like road cones. Seriously, what is up with that?) and Jeff (in the striped shirt behind the monitor on the right). Davy is partially obscuring his face behind Crissee--white ringer t-shirt, bald. This is insane. I wonder how many more of those people I will know next year.
Thanks for posting that pic, man, it made my night. Did JV take that? What's the story?
[EDIT: Okay, figured out that the peter took it. Thanks Peter! I'm telling all my friends!]
[EDIT PART DEUX: Davy, that Derick dude next to me in the way way orange shirt was with me at that Lumus show @ Above Books. Small fuckin world. Or state--could just be Georgia.]

No, I saw him at Colgate University in upstate NY. Not the best venue, but the show was free even for non-students.
