Totally John Linnell, like holy shit. I don't even really listen to them anymore, but when I did, once I found out who did what, only one of them did songs I liked, pretty much.

For those not in the know and maybe this would be better in the In The Earbuds forum,
we are talking about the two songwriters from They Might Be Giants. One mostly plays the accordion, one mostly plays the guitar.

But like yeah: Linnell. Flansburgh's got Purple Toupee, but mostly all the great songs were Linnell-penned. Don't Let's Start, She's An Angel, Ana Ng, They'll Need A Crane, Dead. Others, later on... Linnel has the b-side She Was A Hotel Detective, which destroys Flansburgh's (She Was A) Hotel Detective.

I have been on the Linnell side ever since jr. high, when I thought he was sexxay. Okay not sexxay but kinda cute in a way. Yes, I was a deep jr. high kid.

I prefer "sexxay" and Flans.

Does the love for Linnell have to do with the fact that he looks like Dave Eggers? And that like. mad peeps think Eggers is foine?

linnell is incredibly talented, near the point of gifted. flansburgh has had some inspired cover choices, and is probably responsible for a lot of TMBG's success. flansy's the heart of the band.

but linnell is THE songwriter. name one of your favorite TMBG songs, and if it isn't "istanbul" then it'll probably be linnell's.

on the tmbg wiki (tmbw.net) there's a song ranking system, and usually there's only a three or four flansburgh tunes in the top 25 or so.

i mean, i love flansburgh, but linnell is godly.

end.

yeah, andrew, we might have to fist fight over this

my answer, though:

Flans is all right, and he's probably the drive behind the band (agreed about him being the "heart"), but Linnell is totally the better songwriter of the two, and really just an amazing songwriter in general.

Being forced to choose between the Johns seems sacriligeous to me, as if you can even think of separating the two halves of TMBG. It's like picking which is your favorite foot, or your favorite member of the Holy Trinity.

of course, I did just vote for Linnell.

And, if you're interested: the Left one, and the Son.

WHY DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE???

This is like picking your favorite Charlie's Angel! I refuse to side with one. Both are excellent and I would like to be eternally joined with them in a threesome of creative conjugation.

I really wouldn't have one without the other.

Now, which member of the band of Dans do you think was the most expendable?
