dicsuss. I really liked it, but i've had friends say that it seems too forced, i think its actually a nice fit with the film. I dont' usually buy soundtracks as a general rule, but there were too many good songs on this one to pass it up. also i want to meet zach braff and have a million of his babies.

what do you think of this sound track?

I want his babies too! You think we can share??
Scrubs never caught my attention, but after Garden State, I sat down to watch my new found celebrity crush last Tuesday.  I cant help but wonder if he is really *that* cool, or if the songs were chosen by other *cool* people... but he has a blog and he seems to be witty and articulate.
About the soundtrack, someone is burning me a copy, and I'll let you know what I think.  I saw Iron and Wine cover "Such Great Heights" about a year and a half ago and I thought it was amazing, and I couldnt believe my ears when I heard it play during the movie.

yeah i read that blog too. i am pretty sure he chose the songs. i remember reading (maybe in that blog) or seeing in an interview (on the same site as the blog! hah) that he chose songs that inspired him, and hoped that they would inspire other people.

i read somewhere that they used a shins song on scrubs, and that was his introduction to them. obviously, he was wowed by it.

i actually bought this soundtrack yesterday. here's what i wrote in my livejournal:

Quote
so i gave a listen to the garden state soundtrack, which i'd kinda written off since it doesn't have that postal service song and i already have a third of its tracks on other albums. but when i listened to it, damn, it was like watching the movie all over again. any album that can present me with a coldplay song i don't loathe is probably worth buying. and there's nothing on it i don't like, so i went ahead and picked it up.

after listening to it from start to finish, i realized of course that the postal service song IS on it, it's just not by the postal service. a cover of the postal service song by iron & wine?!? how fucking cool is that?!? it took me almost the entire song to realize it was the same song--the perils of disregarding an occasional song title--because iron & wine's version is very stripped down (obvs) and a LOT slower. but it's there, dammit. hooray!

so yeah, i'm enjoying it. typically, i only buy soundtracks to movies that have moved me in a personal way...movies i experienced deeply. often, the music has a lot to do with how a movie affects me, and so, by owning the soundtrack, it's like i have a part of that emotional experience to listen to whenever i want.

thanks, smashing.

according to the liner notes of the soundtrack, "such great heights" was "written by ben gibbard and jimmy tamborello," aka the postal service.

I like the Iron & Wine cover a lot better than the Postal Service's original.  Not that I dislike the Postal Service--I like them quite a bit.  But the Iron & Wine version is just ... I don't know.  It seems to have a depth that is missing from the original.

My brother keeps telling me to buy the Garden State soundtrack, but I don't really see the point since I already have more than half the stuff on it ...

The Postal Service cover of Such Great Heights can be heard in the new film Garden State, written and directed by Zach Braff.

but i guess that the liner notes should be right...

yeah, i think whoever wrote that didn't really consider how it might look. i think it can be read both ways.

"The Postal Service cover of Such Great Heights can be heard in the new film Garden State, written and directed by Zach Braff."

were it actually an iron and wine song, this statement would indicate that the version in the film is by the postal service--them covering iron and wine. as that's not the case, i think it's just a badly worded statement.

and hey davy, the second paragraph of your quote from your lj isn't actually in the lj entry. wtf?

also, i just saw this movie last night and it blew my motherfucking mind. i loved it.

one more thing--i'd say the famous nick drake tune is "pink moon". i'd actually consider "one of these things first" to be pretty obscure, and was impressed to see it in the movie.

roque, i agree. i actually was really let down, after reading a review of garden state that mentioned the "it'll change your life" comment re: "new slang". i was flipping through my girlfriend's itunes directory on her computer a week or so ago and found that song. so i listened to it, and it's actually kinda boring. i found "caring is creepy" to be a much better song.

then again, on the whole i don't really get what all the fuss is about where the shins are concerned.

"new slang" was easily my favorite track on the first shins album (which, it should be noted, i didn't like near as much as the majority of the planet seemed to). when i heard they were putting some as-yet-unnamed shins tunes in the movie, my guess was that "new slang" was probably in the group. i like it, and i think it works nicely with the rest of the music, especially the simon & garfunkel tune. the first time i heard it, S&G was all i could think of.

after a few days of listening, the only tracks that i don't care much for are 5 and 6 (colin hay's "i just don't think i'll ever get over you" and cary brothers "blue eyes"). they're pleasant enough on their own terms, but they certainly don't stand out amongst the others and they allow the album to sag a bit in the middle. from then on, though, it's flawless.

Was "New Slang" the one in the McDonald's commercial during the last winter Olympics?  That certainly changed my life.  Specifically, I won't spend another minute of that life buying another Shins album.

The McDonald's thing derailed my Shins adoration for awhile, but I got over it, at least partially (I never did buy Chutes Too Narrow, but I might someday). I read a quote by the head Shin that went something like "if kids are angry about licensing, they should start buying records again" or something like that, and while it's certainly an oversimplification and an exaggeration, I understood.
