Yes, but fdisk can't change partitions without destroying all the data on them.

I know.  Destroying data sort of arouses me, though.

This is a home machine, right, not your work machine?  I'm asking to eliminate the possibility of some kind of roaming profile fuckup.

Have you run the Windows drive check tool?  On XP, right-click on the C: drive, Properties, Tools, Error-checking, Check now.  I'd choose the "automatically fix file system errors" option.  It will probably tell you that system files are in use, and would you like to schedule a full check for your next reboot?  Yes, you would.

alistarr*, can you tell me what was in the folder before you deleted it?  and do the contents reappear or just the folder itself?

OK just read back and found out that it was MP3s to be burned to CD.  Have you burned any CDs since then?  What program did you use to burn the CD?

Are you familiar enough with the Windows registry to search the registry for the name of that folder and know what you're looking at?

i used sonic recordnow to burn my cd. inside the folder were all the mp3 tracks that went on the cd, which i then deleted.

i've not burned any cds since then, but i intend to tonight so can report back on if it works, if that's what you're asking.

it is my home machine, and so i'm pretty sure it's not a profile issue. i've not tried the drive check tool though; i will do so.

i'm not really at all sure what you mean by the windows registry, so i'm guess the answer to the last question is "no", i'm afraid.

thanks for being interested, anyway! will hopefully be back in a cheerful mood tomorrow, having tried that error check thingummy...

OK well the one question you didn't answer was whether the files themselves come back or just the folder, but I'm assuming it's just the folder.  I've read about issues where a program was looking for the last files it accessed in a folder that no longer existed, and recreating the folder in the process.  Even though you haven't burned a CD since then, I'm pretty sure Sonic has a startup program that either loads invisibly or drops an icon in your system tray.  So it will be interesting to see if the folder keeps reappearing after you burn another CD.

I'm redoing a room that's going to be the location of my dsl modem, and I'm going to set it up with a wireless router.

How much do physical boundaries interfere with the wireless router?  Ideally it will be on a small table under a desk with 2" thick particle board sides and top, and behind that, a plaster wall.  If it doesn't go there, it will be between the side of the desk and the wall, with another wall directly behind it.

I know you can pick up signals like across the street and stuff; I basically want to know if putting in either of these spaces will make signal strength go from like full to 25%.

On a related note, my new mini stereo plays music off a usb drive or from a usb device attached with a cable.  That made me think man, there has to be something that I can plug my external hard drive to to wirelessly broadcast to a set of speakers, or hopefully (crossing fingers here) the magic usb slot on my stereo.  Anything like that exist?

2" thick particle board is going to fuck with your signal a bit I'm thinking.  It'll go through the plaster no problem, but in my experience solid boundaries like concrete slabs or brick walls or thick wooden barriers or a whole lot of metal in the construction even if it's not a solid barrier, will cause some signal degradation.  The best way to answer your question for sure is to simulate the conditions as closely as you can and do a site survey, see what level signal you get from the various locations where you'll be using the wireless network.

What the hell kind of desk is made of 2" thick particle board anyway?  And is there a problem with mounting the wireless router on a wall?

I don't want the router on the wall because the idea is to keep unsightly routers and modems out of sight.

Ikea desks are made of 2" particle board - well, maybe it's more like 1.5".

I guess the question is kind of academic because I'm setting up a desk in my living room so I won't keep my computer set up in the kitchen, as I have for a year and a half as a makeshift space that became permanent.  I probably won't ever use the wireless, I just thought I'd give it a shot because I already have the router, and wow, what if instead of after watching a movie in bed I could just check my email and shut off the machine instead of (gasp) carrying the pc back to the desk and plugging in the ethernet cable.

Or in case I set up the desk in another room, or somehow require an internet connection while supine on the sofa.
