Best LPTJ article in quite a while.
And oh so true.
I'm in no rush to buy the new Interpol. This tuesday, my money belongs to The Arcade Fire and the Thrills. Both have fantaaaaastic new albums coming out.

Hey John, is your comparison to the Strokes based on the opening riff of "Slow Hands"? Because when I first heard that song, it immediately reminded me of Julian and Co.

Here I was about to say "but you didn't mention My Dad Is Dead or Kitchens Of Distinction" and then I read the piece and realized that wasn't the point.
Nice.
Although Interpol can NOT come near the brilliance of Danielle Spencer, who played Dee, the sarcastic sister on
What's Happening!!

I hope my affection for the album came through, though - it's really triffic!

It's good. But there's so much better stuff coming out tomorrow, that to get the new Interpol just seems... very low priority.
I mean, have you HEARD the Arcade Fire yet John?
And the New Thrills record really does sound like the bastard child of Roxy Music and the Beach Boys.

are we allowed to compare them to Echo & The Bunnymen if we note that they improve the Bunnymen on every conceivable level?

Echo & the Bunnymen and Kitchens of Distinction are both damn fine references, I wouldn't have come up with them but they work well.

Yeah - they're fine I guess, I'm not hearin' the saviors of indie thing everybody else is. However they did result in the funniest P-fork review of the year, so there's that

But he caught the key thing to me, which is the emotional quality of it all. There's something in Win & Regines voices... a trembling, horrified quality, that just makes them sound so real, so resonant, so tortured. it works.
I wouldn't say Saviors of Indie either. But definitely the best debut this year, and definitely the album most worthy of it's hype (along w/ Blueberry Boat)
The records that're meeting pretty much all of my outrageouly-emotional-to-the-point-of-overwhelming-me needs this year are the Juniorboys album and the R. Kelly
U Saved Me
disc. And of course there's Sarah Dougher, who hasn't released anything yet this year but who is, for my money, the best indie artist working.
As to great debuts, have you heard the
Choo Choo La Rouge album?

Weird. As to the content of Johns "post"...
I'm not familiar with Sara Dougher. Care to point me in the direction of something to pick up or somesuch?
And for some reason the Junior Boys album just does not click with me. I've no idea why. It has a great many elements that absolutely should be very appealing to me.
Maybe I've just been listening to it in the wrong place/time/frame of mind. I keep giving it another try because I really want to like it, and I keep reaching for that skip button.

Sorry that I edited your post Keith, it was an accident! I meant to click "quote" to quote in what you'd said that I was responding to - instead I clicked "edit" (an option that shows up for moderators) and now I am you for that post. WHOA CRAZY INTERWEB FLUID PERSONA MADNESS
anyhow, sorry about that. As to Sarah Dougher, I think my favorite of her albums is "The Walls Ablaze," but "The Bluff" was my first & is also terrific, and the debut, "Day One," is also good, though I wouldn't start with it. She was on Mr. Lady; I think K might release Harper's Arrow, the one she's been working on about the Odyssey (!) which is reported to be really good, but I could be wrong about the K thing.
Her website doesn't work so good for me in Safari but
http://www.sarahdougher.com
points to it - I assume for users of IE it works fine. Aquarius Records says it has both Day One & The Walls Ablaze in stock, though their descriptions sound fairly unmoved by the discs. Different strokes I s'pose. For me, her great lyrics + gorgeous chords + transparent production + alarmingly beautiful, rich melodies = the best indie songwriter working, period, with the possible exception of Franklin Bruno, who's working in the same ballpark but playing a different sport, so to speak.

Very strange, because "Take You On a Cruise" reminded me instantly of "If I Were a Carpenter." Glad to see someone else is insane.

That sport is "Lacrosse" and it is played in a very different ballpark. More white wine, honey!

Are Penn & Teller anti-AA? That's a pity, AA have really helped a lot of people.

i dunno man, i was anti-aa for a long time because of the whole "submitting to a higher power" thing, and etc. but now i'm dating someone who's involved in aa, and she's been clean for 7 months. so it seems to me that it can't be all bad. as john said, it helps a lot of people. and hey, the whole higher power thing seems a lot less "accept christ as your lord and savior" to me now that i've talked to my girlfriend a whole bunch about it. i was just getting the simplified version of it before, which was what freaked me out.
