I got something to say
I gave your baby his ba-ba today
And it doesn’t matter much to me
As long as it’s well-fed

Well I got something to say
I showed nothing but the deepest respect for your mother today
And it doesn’t matter much to me
As long as she smiiiled

Sweet lovely girl
I want to hold your hand
Come sweet girl, one more caress

Well there goes my argument. That was lovely.

I would just pick a different song.  I mean, really, that song has been covered by every band in the goddamn universe already anyway, so there's no reason to be one of them!

Whether or not your friend is being ridiculous, I don't know.  I think it is a valid concern, but I'm also of the mind that people shouldn't be fucking coddled, either.

It's really only offensive if Jason is pro-rape.

dude your friend is big brother.

i just can't rationalize someone being that put out by this particular cover. plus unless there are only like 3 people going to this show why does it matter if she doesn't go to this show. and in the big picture if you do cover it and she holds it against you forever doesn't that say something about her?

and no i don't know exactly what it is. this thread is flavored to me by a memory of my old band, the poison control center. we were going to open for the frogs once and pat's then fiance took of her engagement ring and put their fucking wedding on the line cause she didn't want us to open for them. so sadly we didn't, and i forever hated her for doing that.

and yeah that shit didn't work out either by the way, long story short.

i think that's the kind of thing that would lead to me breaking up with that girl, if not right away then after having something under a week to think about it. god, what bullshit. that story makes ME mad, and i had no part in it!

Joe!  I didn't know you were in PCC.  That's awesome.  I know you're not on did they live happily ever after? (at least, your name's not on it, I dunno), but I love that album and I love that band and I love you.

As far as this argument goes, I'm kinda falling on the side of "It's the fucking Misfits!  Whatever, dude..." but I also think you should play "Where Eagles Dare" instead, because that song has the greatest chorus ever penned by anyone ever.  Plus, in this case, might be a pointed jab if your friend is indeed pulling this shit for attention.  Which isn't to suggest that as the primary reason for playing that song, just, y'know, maybe a bonus.  Forget I said anything, I'm an asshole.

This reminds me of a sitch I got into coediting a lit mag a few years back.  I'd submitted a story which was basically a really graphic description of a forced blow job (man on man) as a metaphor for...something that eludes me now.  It was accepted and someone on staff leaked the story to their significant other, who then threatened to pull their submissions over my story.  The matter was calmed down and nothing was pulled from the magazine and my filthy little story and his photographs lived in peace.

That had really nothing to do with this.  Sorry.

gender changes in certain songs is acceptable

Ugh, that bugs me.  I always imagine the lead singer thinking about it beforehand, going, "Uh oh... What if they think I'm GAY????"

only certain songs, no when it's a "gay or not thing" more like when i girl would cover, say Papa M's "Sorrow Reigns":

Quote
sarah jane, sorrow reigns blue
sarah jane, sorrow reigns blue
there was something like a wall between us
that stopped your going down on my penis
the ghost of lover's past still await your response
was I just a medium in your seance
I had to turn off all my feelings towards you
for I am not the one that rewards you
I'll be with other women you'll be with other men
still I can't help but wonder about
what could have been
sarah jane sorrow reigns blue
you didn't love me the way I loved you

i don't mind if she changes it to make more sense.

otherwise, do it how it's written.

uhhhh.... why doesn't that make sense as written?

Unsurprisingly, rape jokes don't make me double over with laughter. If anybody would care to explain why it's ok if band A does it (but not, presumably, if band B does it, or everybody wouldn't be saying 'But it's the Misfits!') I'd be happy to hear you out somewhere outside of LPTJ.

it's part of The Song, and if they're covering The Song, they should cover The Song without fucking with it. yeah, it's a hella offensive line to some people, but the misfits didn't seem too worried about offending a couple of people at shows, and neither should your friends. if the friend doesn't show, it'll be too bad, but it's the song, and these people aren't the first to play it.

i don't think the point of the line was to get people lolling all over the circlepit, i don't think there was much of a point, it's a misfits song, and i see no reason to take it seriously. i'd be surprised if glen danzig had any truly off-putting opinions about the subject, for that matter.

if he's playing the song deliberately to piss some people off then that's a little low, but if he's just covering a widely covered song, this outrage is unnecessary.

i agree that the "but it's the misfits" line of defense is flawed, but i stick by my contention that they didn't mean the line seriously. it's role-playing, and the role they're playing is that of a horror movie villain. it's as simple as that.
