... the role of the entertainer in society.
My friend Erin is interested in researching this topic, and asked me if I could help her find some books about the social repsonsibility of artists. So I was wondering if any of you could help us out. Thanks!

The only thing that is coming immediately to mind is Susan Sontag's
On Photography
and
Regarding the Pain of Others
, both of which deal to some extent with the social responsibility of photographers. I disagree with a lot of what Sontag has to say in these books (especially her treatment of Riis and Arbus in
On Photography
), but... yeah.

Its not a book, but Kafka wrote a short story called the Hunger Artist that deals with some interesting issues on the role or perception of the Artist in society

Get Oscar Wilde's critical essays. I think UChicago Press published a collection. Michael mentioned Sontag--might as well go for
Notes on Camp
too.

Yeah, "Soul of Man Under Socialism" would probably be really interesting, especially to compare the proto-dirty-hippie with the Mark-V-Dirty-Hippies like Zinn and Sontag.

I don't see how "Soul of Man..." would be relevant here - but I'm also extremely unconvinced by the Fabians and by their liberalism as exemplified by that essay.

That song kicks so much ass - for 30 seconds. After the first line and the first riff, it goes badly downhill.
My favourite Artaud soundbites:
"All writing is so much pigshit"
"I am a rat's ass suspended from the sky" - his one-sentence description of the Oedipus complex.

The other stuff mentioned being "artists' social responsibility" and "Soul of Man..." being "society's artistic responsibility" though maybe I'm thinking too much about it; it's been a while since I read it.
