Is DGC under Time Warner?  Cos that aquisition probably happened when Nirvana signed back in '90/'91.

My understanding is that this happened in the mid-late ninties. Sub Pop were having financial problems so sold 49% share for something like $20Mill (?). Apparently you could pay a quick visit to the Sup Pop offices and walk away with a huge box of records, which may not sound a big deal but when lots of your bands are not part of the big explosion it adds up. I think this was just a small example of how out of control they got leading up to the sale (flash offices, an English branch etc)

Sup Pop could probably buy back the 49% for a fraction of the price today I imagine.

Word up to Sub Pop, though, if for nothing else then for Codiene and Nirvana's first. I know there's so much more but I would give them all high-fives just for the Codiene.

Big ups to them for releasing the Constantines stateside.  And for releasing so many records that meant the world to me when I was growing up.  Oh, and for putting out Low's The Great Destroyer.  Sub Pop is a-okay in my book.

Did I just hate on Codiene?  I don't think I intended that.  I've never actually (get ready for it) heard Codiene before.

Maaik I love you very much with all the internet love in my internet heart but you did not just say anything resembling what I think you just said, DID YOU??!

Anyway man really they were awfully good, and worth checking out. Frigid Stars, dude.

I do have great respect for SubPop, though... mostly just for the 90's stuff, but they really do have a pretty high level of awesome to their releases.

(Myke: I seem to remember owing you a tape dub of Neil Diamond's 12 Songs... want me to send you that b/w Codiene's Frigid Stars??? It'll make for the most oddly paired tape EVAR. I'll do it, dude.)

Is DGC under Time Warner?  Cos that aquisition probably happened when Nirvana signed back in '90/'91.

dgc (the david geffen company) is just a subsidiary of geffen records, which has always been a major.

Quote from: "wikipedia"
Geffen Records was founded by David Geffen in 1975 (after having founded Asylum Records in the 1970s). Geffen was originally part of Warner Brothers Records until it was purchased by MCA in 1990 and is now part of Universal Music Group. In 2003, Geffen was merged with MCA Records.

This I knew.  I meant the aquisition of Sub Pop by Geffen (man, I really wish I still had a copy of Come As You Are).

sub pop wasn't ever owned by geffen. the sub pop logo did appear on the nirvana albums that were put out by dgc, but this was due to a provision of nirvana's contract with sub pop. time warner actually bought a stake in sub pop after geffen had become a part of mca.

Geffen started Asylum? Cool.

I'm playing Tom Waits - Foreign Affairs right now, and Geffen just won himself a few percentiles of a brownie point.

Yeah, dude, Time Warner is a fuckin Octopus to the entertainment industry. They got their little nasty tendrils in it all.

(Maaik, dude, I was dubbing a copy of Frigid Stars for you yesterday and the damned record called it caput right there on the turntable. Halfway through "Cigarette Machine" it went all wonky. I didn't realize it was so close to disintergration but I did get it used and it has been played heavily. So the Neil Diamond is still going to soon be on it's way, but I'm afraid I can't supply the Codiene.)
