on saturday, around noon, my wife delivered our son finn. he was a tiny 1 lb. 14 oz, and with a gestational age of 26 weeks, was born 11 weeks early.

soon after birth, he was rushed to gwinnett medical center, a larger, technologically superior hospital about 45 minutes from athens. he'll be here for months, probably, but may be moved back to athens when his condition becomes more stable. whichever hospital he's at, under the best of circumstances, we won't be able to take him home for at least 3 months.

he's doing well right now, as well as can be. but the situation is extremely touch-and-go, and has to be re-evaluated everyday. the good news is that he is already breathing on his own, he is already regulating his own blood pressure, and his first transfusion occurred last night and went smoothly. erin and i are staying in a hotel across the road, trying mainly not to be overwhelmed. he's just so, so small.

all kinds of strength & hope, fygmynt & co.

i know i'm repeating myself here, but i was also born early and weighed 2lbs at birth, then went down to 1lb 13oz at one point, and all is completely well with me today. so i hope that is of some reassurance to you today. wishing nothing but the best to the three of you.

erin has actually done fantastic. her recovery has been quick and comprehensive. she's near 100% already, and doing what she can do to help out finn.

(the breastpump is an amazing invention.)
