Davy, a little late on the love, but my heart is totally with you, Erin, and wee Finn. At least you know that you've got a gaggle of crazy Last Plane peeps pulling for you and yours. It's a posse of love, bro.

i work around magazines a lot, and just fyi: there's a sizeable article on premature babies in the March-April issue of "Mothering: Natural Family Living" magazine (pgs. 38-47). if you're interested i can copy it for you.
seems to focus mainly on the importance of breastfeeding, and skin-to-skin contact in the first several weeks following birth. just thought i'd mention, since it made me think of the little man.

I read about a study recently that basically said after a certain point, constant parental contact is just as good as an incubator for premature babies.
But more importantly, how's the lil' tyke doing?

I read about a study recently that said tin foil hats actually attenuate EEG, making it easier for your brain waves to be read, not harder.

That was a pretty awesome paper. The tin foil hats only made it easier to read brain waves for a rather narrow frequency band... including the ones restricted for government use

thanks for the tip! erin actually has a subscription to that magazine, so we should be getting that issue any day now.
she's been "kangarooing" with finn every chance she gets (that's the skin-on-skin contact), and finn seems to really, really love it. just nestles in and falls asleep. and my god at the amount of breast milk she's pumped. every 2.5 hours. i'd say she's easily first place in the NICU.

I read about a study recently that basically said after a certain point, constant parental contact is just as good as an incubator for premature babies.
"kangaroo care", as it's called, only became popular in medical circles around the early 90s, when it was found that some neonatal intensive care units in central and south america--where the facilities were too poor to afford fancy new incubators--had better survival rates and fewer problems with infection than their moneyed, technologically-advanced peers in the states. nurses at these poorer NICUs had been handing the babies over to their mothers to keep them warm, and this skin-on-skin contact was found to make the babies stronger and improve the quality and quantity of the mother's breast milk. pretty cool stuff.
i had the chance tonight to kangaroo finn, but i'm still too nervous, so i let erin do the honors again (she was more than happy to oblige). i did change his diaper for the first time, though.

forgot to mention!
a few days ago, erin and i utilized our mellow mushroom gift certificate: got a large pizza with green olives, brought it back to the hotel, and ate it on the bed while watching
i love toys
on VH1. life was gooood. i'd forgotten how utterly kickass that place is. without exaggeration, i can say it was the best pizza i've had in 2 or 3 years.
you guys are so awesome. i ran out of superlatives a long time ago, but please realize what an important role you played in making these past couple weeks bearable.
so much love!

and for those of you keeping score:
erin and i got to watch finn get a bath a couple nights ago. it was the first time erin and i have been able to see him completely naked, without all the wires and breathing masks and patches and IVs.
it was revelatory. i mean, they took all that stuff away, and he was still ok. he was real. tiny, but real. and screaming, too. never heard him cry that much (still sounds like a kitten, but a really pissed off kitten). anyway, he's doing well, and in another week or so, he'll be clear of the dreaded preemie danger zone.
thanks again for the vibes and support!

This is so incredibly excellent, though it's unfortunate that soon, you'll no longer be able to give him an Alec-Guinness-style look and say, "He's more machine than man now, twisted and evil."
