Best possible story about skull cups:
Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus I, a rough contemporary with Charlemagne, was getting tons of shit from the great Khan of the Bulgars, Krum. King Krum (I know) was doing what Bulgarians did for the first several hundred years of their existence: invading Thrace, depopulating it, generally raping and pillaging all the way to the bank(s of the Euxine). So Nicephorus decides to get a big ass army, and don't let anyone tell you the Byzantines couldn't fight, because they could. In medium engagements, unit for unit, Byzantine cavalry were among the best in the world. Anyway, so Nicephorus calls up the themes, sallies out into Thrace. Big fucking mistake. Krum sneaks up on him, surprises the shit out of him, slaughters most of his army and kills Nicephorus at the Battle of Pliska. King Krum gold-plated his skull and used it as a drinking cup for the rest of his life.
If I actually went to parties, I would probably just tell stories about the Byzantine Empire.

Now THAT'S how you stick it to your enemies. I'd totally go to parties with you. The parties I went to were generally bad.

I think my Byzantine strategy would totally work.
"Hey, didja hear about the Empress Theodora's party trick? It involves a goose, a little barley, and A LOT of alcohol!"

It'd totally work. Here's my version:
I'm not obsessed with the history of the civil war per se, but I sort of am...it's hard to describe. Anyway, I tried really hard to convince my roommate in college to buy a confederate or union general's uniform, and then I'd buy the opposing side. Then, we'd show up to a party seperately in full costume and have some trivial loud argument that would devolve into a brawl.
The costumes were too expensive, though.

Roy, I'm gonna say this once:
COME VISIT FUCKING NEW YORK.
You know my roommate used to reenact the Civil War with his family, right? And the parties I go to are welcome occasions to talk about Byzantine badassery?
Seriously, dudes. COME HERE.

Fuck.
So this thread started with my lust for the
Deering Crossfire
.
The other day, I was ranting about it (as usual) to Zeuglodon, and she looked it up on eBay. I've never seen it there before. But now, a Guitar Center in Tennesee is
selling one
.
The highest bid was $1047. I've never seen it anywhere for less than $1800.
So I placed a bid of $1100.
I'm the current high bidder.
If I win this banjo, I will be so fucked, financially.
But so happy.
I don't know what to hope for.

I mean, OMFG.
I ran into one on eBay, I was going to buy it, but then my internet went down for the weekend and someone else grabbed it for more than I had been willing to bid...
Boooo.

It's not so much that I am lusting after this and I can't afford it, it's just that I want someone to buy it FOR me. I am not even sure what it means, but oh how I laughed.

I know that I have been shocked somewhere in this thread at the price of bags before, but I waaaaaaaaaant this one
and it's
$104
.
And no, I am not a bike messenger, and yes, the fact that I want one probably means I am some wannabe hipster who has a degree of self-loathing because she does not have a messenger bag. But IT'S SO PRETTY. It has LIONS. LIONS! WITH WINGS! AGH
