to C: it's that 'completely sealed' part. really, there's no such thing. rear hubs have more than just bearings inside, and things do break, and even the best hub gets some shit inside of it and has to be rebuilt. i've had to do it a few times. all suspension is the same deal too, sealed as well as possible but still needs periodic rebuilding. basically you just can't road-gunk-proof a bike, so shit's going to make it's way into everything eventually, and when you have something as crazy as that with such small tolerances, you're going to have to keep it perfectly clean.
bob: surly is nice. i was planning on getting a surly instigator and building it from the ground back when i got a discount on such things. they're not handmade or anything like that anymore (maybe a couple, who knows,) but still well designed and built to be abused.
mine, i got from a pawnshop for $85 and turned into what i wanted. good, light, true temper frame, and it had brakes, wheels and a drivetrain. i just took off all the gears i didn't want, got a surly singulator, put on some nice handlebars, pedals, tires and the salsa seat i've used on every bike for the past 7 or 8 or something years. fucking greatest bike in the world. weighs about 23 pounds.

Sayin, it's an oil-lubed hub, which seals better than a greased one and also washes gunk away from the gears. If they can seal a car's transmission and hubs against road-gunk, I don't see why they can't do the same with a $1000 bike hub.
If you're talking mountain-biking of course you will eventually get equipment failure without regular maintenance, but a good oil hub should be maintenance-free on the road.

compared to an auto transmission it's a matter of scale. the gaskets don't have the same contact area, more of it is exposed, and smaller particles make a bigger difference.
i mean yeah, it's a sweet hub, but i will never trust something like that. give me real gears that i can see and fix in the middle of a sidewalk or woods, or none at all.

Just out of curiosity, was it on a lot of mid-price clothes or a little bit of really nice clothes?

i honestly don't know. it was on two suits, two shirts, a pair of pants and a wool coat. so it wasn't like they were, you know, thousand dollar shoes, anyway.

Sounds pretty par for the course, actually.
The last time I went suit shopping, I ended up getting two for $60 apiece off the clearance rack at Express. I was pretty proud of myself.

Oh man, I got a pair of pants that I really loved from Express fo' Men years ago.
Seriously, if money was no object, I'd drape myself in the finest of Kenneth Cole, Perry Ellis etc.
Melissa took me clothes shopping today--got a nice pair of brown slacks, a white button-less polo (I hate polo shirts, but the buttonless thing works for me), a brown corduroy suit jacket, and this awesome lookin striped dress shirt. 'bout a hunnert fo'ty bucks.
Lately, the one thing I've been wanting that I can't afford is a field audio kit so I don't have to keep borrowing one from work. Basically a Porta-Brace "side slinger" ($200), an Edirol R-09 ($400), some sort of shotgun mic (currently using a Beyer MCE86), cables, cans (right now using Sony MDR-7506s), shocks, clips, a fishing pole, fluffy windscreen an' allat stuff. Oh, and a decent digital camera.
Good god, it's kinda scary to think I'm slinging about a grand and a half over my shoulder and charging around the metro area with it.

One of the peeps I know at school has one of those Edirol ones and it's pretty damn sweet I gotta say.
In other news, I could probably afford these, but there's no guarantee I'll wear cufflinks more than once a year:

I won these last week:
They're not exactly what I wanted, but they were only $10 with shipping.
I do all my formal shopping with my mom. She works for Macy's, so I get a really thick discount. Last time I got 3 shirts for about $10 a piece and a belt for under $5. If I catch the right sale, I get stuff for about 70% off.

Only thing I don't like about it is the postage stamp-sized display. That's a pretty minor gripe though.

I wish for some new sneakers. And a nice jacket. Not a coat.
I like these, I think.

Things I want:
A big fancy TV SET - one of the ones that's very flat and shiny and quiet.
Several handsome HATS and the ability to look good in them.
WINGTIP lace-ups, handmade.
A fine-tip PARKER 51 fountain pen to replace the one I have that got cracked when that fucker tried to mug me.
A new briar PIPE with a shallower, easier-to-smoke bowl and curved stem.
A black underbust CORSET with detachable garters.
A black PURSE with lots of small pockets inside for my phone, camera, lipstick, keys, etc.
A dedicated PARKING SPACE so I stop spending the GNP of a small African country on parking tickets.

makes me think of going to a show back in 2004 in toronto. we brought a bunch of recording gear with us and there were three of us lugging around probably close to $20k in gear through the streets of downtown toronto to the venue. i've thought about an r09, but i know some people who haven't been terribly happy with them. i don't like the r1 and i have had several bad experiences with the edirol r4. i would like to get a sounddevices 702 (or 722, but probably would go with the 702), but it's hard to justify/imagine myself coming up with the money anytime soon for either of those.
