anyone have any tips or thoughts re: Lexington, KY?

I'm headed there at the end of the month, and I'll have about 36 hours to check it out on my own and see what I think about the prospect of spending the next 5 or so years there. I'm getting suggestions from a couple of people of what to do while there, but I'm open to any others, and I'm curious about anything people have to say about the place in general. I've lived in Los Angeles, Portland (OR), and Boston, so this would be fairly culture shock-inducing I expect.

Don't know anything about Lexington itself but it's right near Frankfort, where the Buffalo Trace distillery is, and Lawrenceburg, where the Wild Turkey distillery is.  Both give free tours, the Buffalo Trace one is really nice and has a free tasting in the gift shop at the end, no tasting at the Wild Turkey tour but the lady who gives tours (if she's still the one doing it) is a character.  Either one (or both) would be worth the drive if you were gonna have wheels.

Thanks for the suggestion! I am considering renting a car, and normally that would be very tempting, but I think I'm going to be trying to do more of the scoping out neighborhoods, checking out the town, getting a feel for what goes on, etc. kind of thing on this trip, especially since I've got limited time. Should I end up down there (at this point I have no clue what the likelihood of that is), I will so be going on those tours though!

Hey, Louisville is in Kentucky too.  You should go there, because Lexington is just kind of a worthless pit, whereas Louisville is one of the greatest cities on the face of the planet.

PRO TIP: If you're in a hotel in Louisville and someone offers you a "Hot Brown" IT IS NOT SOMETHING DIRTY

It really depends on the hotel.

Yeah, not so much with the options here, unfortunately (unless someone is capable of moving a university)—I'm hoping to have a few choices, but we'll see. I will say that I have places (a place really) that I have decidedly more reservations about moving to on my list of potential locations than Lexington. I've started to think I included that one so I could say about everywhere else, "hey, at least this has to be better than ____ at least!"

fair enough, IT MAY NOT BE A DIRTY THING, some due diligence will be required to ascertain the nature of the hot brown in question.

You could live in Shelbyville (where Will Oldham, and I believe My Morning Jacket live) and commute, straight down I-64!  I'm trying to help you Jess, I really am but you're not making it easy with this whole 'living in Lexington' thing.

As far as culture shock and reservations go, Lexington, KY is filled up with middle-class college educated people, who in my experience pretty much talk, think and act mostly the same way everywhere in America.  So I wouldn't worry about it.  Heck, I think they've even got a Whole Foods now!

What I'm trying to say I guess is that you're not going to be a social outcast if you support abolition.

My sister lives in Lexington.

It seems kind of boring and all of the beautiful horse farms are currently being made into row housing for yuppies (like my sister).

Lexington was actually not that bad, just really small. It's got a somewhat artsy, interesting center to it at least, and being a University town seems to help some.

That's all a relief, because I will indeed be moving there for the next 5 years or so. Smile Go Wildcats!
