i drank more tonight than i have in months.  not to say that i drank rather a lot, because i didn't.  two glasses of wine, a beer, and some of the worst shit i have ever tasted:  one of those malt liquor/energy drink combos, flavoured like sour apples.  It tasted like fucking pinesol.

As much as you keep posting about mead lately, I keep meaning to post a picture of the 5 gallon carboy of mead I have in my closet to tease you Greg.  I keep meaning to bottle the mead so that I can eventually drink it too, but I have been occupied with other things.  Well, I've got the bottles and a buddy whose house I can take over for an afternoon of bottling, it's just a matter of finding the time.

Here's an older photo of it I found:

I brewed it about a year ago now, so I think about 2-3 months in the bottle and it will be very drinkable.  Frankly it's very drinkable now but I tend to like a sparkling mead better than a still mead, so I'm going to prime it before bottling, and that'll need a bit of aging.

hells yes. donated ten pounds of wildflower honey from mum's beehives to this mead-maker dude with the assurance that we'd get a cut of the yield when it matured but have long since lost his number, apparently the beverage originally took an average of three years to get done. did you know that's where the term honeymoon comes from? traditionally part of a woman's dowry, good mead made her a worthy wife. drunken love!

Yes, in fact the first time I brewed mead it was as a wedding present for my brother and his wife.  Good thing they told us a date 2 years ahead of time.  If someone had decided to do that as a wedding present for me they'd only have gotten 6 weeks lead time.

They got married in Vegas and I couldn't carry 2 cases of mead on the plane with me so I just brought along a couple of 750 ml bottles and presented them at the reception along with a little speech about the original meaning of the word honeymoon.  Everyone tried a little of the mead.  My mom wrinkled up her nose, said "I don't like it" and handed it back.  It was pretty well received by everyone else though.

The mead pictured there has I think 18 lbs of honey in it, along with some citric acid, orange zest, and sliced ginger.  I think when I prime it before bottling I'm going to juice a bit of ginger root and add it along with the priming honey.

wanna barter for a pint? i'll take up knitting again if you'd like a pair of cashmere socks for the cold months (that's something real, i do hate to knit) or try to figure out a trade you might agree to. let's make a deal.

I am not opposed to some form of trade or barter (within reason, 'cause the reason I brew the stuff is because I want to drink it not give it away Smile ).  I wouldn't want you to take up a pastime you hate though, because I enjoy brewing.

In other news, I believe that I will have to pick up the makings for some Sazeracs this weekend as a sort of pre-Mardi Gras tribute.

I thought that mead was considered the improve a man's potency, and during the honeymoon (lasting a month after the wedding) the new husband would drink mead, traditionally offering the brewer a gift if the bride fell pregnant within that time.

The explanation I read that gave me the idea to brew them mead for their wedding was in Charlie Papazian's The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing and was closer to that, the practice of drinking mead for a month after a wedding to aid potency.  I was more agreeing with the mead/wedding/honeymoon connection than the particulars thereof.

According to the research I did for that ghastly project on 18th century marriage, this is a myth.

Here's the offending beverage (though ours was in a can):

You see, some good did come out of your ordeal.

How did it turn out, btw?

Great! There was ice all over the roads on Wednesday, so class was canceled. That meant five extra days to prepare. Except I've been working. And our group hasn't met again. So really, I guess we'll see.

This morning, my roommate left for his two-week vacation in Korea.  He was drinking Wild Turkey last night, and I was like, "Hey, you're leaving!  It's a special occasion!"  so I got the bottle of Clynelish out from its hiding-place in my room.  We drank a fair amount of that while watching Magnum PI, and arguing about whether its normal to hide booze just in case prohibition ever strikes again unexpectedly.
