I knew his name looked familiar! Still, I rankle a little when I see "no x, no y" in a list of what makes for good music - it's my inner old-school popist

Here's my top 10. I've used the European release dates though so maybe a couple of them are considered to be 2003 albums.

1) Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts Of The Great Highway
2) Richmond Fontaine - Post To Wire
3) Andrew Bird - Weather Systems
4) Will Johnson - Vultures Await
5) Castanets - Cathedral
6) Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks
7) Drive By Truckers - The Dirty South
8 ) Kevn Kinney - Sun Tangled Angel Revival
9) Richard Buckner - Dents & Shells
10) Thomas Denver Johnsson - Hope To Her

Other great albums were:
Joanna Newsom - Milk Eyed Mender
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
Apostle Of Hustle - Folkloric Feel
Fennesz - Venice
Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles

THE DOUBLE - PALM FRONDS

Apparently, you and I were the only ones to have heard this record, because if any other people had heard it, it would be on all of their lists, too.

I think the whole list concept is a bit silly (being that different albums serve different purposes,) but in addition to the double, last year I was into the new Mount Eerie stuff, Sagan, Magnolia Electric Co., TV on the Radio, and Everything from the DFA.  Other stuff, too, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

Yeah, I just recently got Palm Fronds and I'm probably going to have to revise my list.

Right, because andy cabic is a shitty songwriter. Rolling Eyes

Just because devendra is in the band doesn't mean that Roque has to like his solo work better than vetiver.  Frankly, I think "Angels' Share" is better than any devendra song, easily.

Whoa, whoa, WHOA, now, pardner.  I said NOTHING about Andy Cabic being a shitty songwriter, nor was I implying it.  I think Vetiver is fantastic!  And I didn't say that Roque has to like Devendra better than Vetiver, or that s/he (sorry, don't know) has to like Devendra at all!  I was just surprised to see Vetiver on the list on not Devendra, because most of the people I know that like Vetiver are all about Devendra as well.

Pssh...I'm not the one screaming.  Smile

Frankly, they're two different songwriters.  The enjoyment of one don't mean the enjoyment of the other.  You didn't say "What, no vetiver?" to everyone who listed Devendra, now didja? (Oh snap!)

I mean, hell, if we're going the similar styles route, you could have said "What, no Coco Rosie?" to everyone who posted about Devendra.  But you didn't, and rightly so, because Coco Rosie is terrible.

Bah. I've never liked Devendra, myself. Doesn't he seem a bit... I dunno, disingenuous to anyone?

Hm, I'm interested in hearing more from the Devendra-haters.  I'm totally in love with him and would ask him to marry me if I thought it'd be a good idea, which I don't think it would be.

Why do you think he's disingenuous?

Not a hata, myself, but the guy does seem more than a bit flighty.  He's got that whole hippy-ish sense of being completely out of touch with reality goin' on.

He does write a mean tune, though.  Also, when I first heard "Rejoycing" I couldn't figure out if it was a white guy or a black woman, although I was leaning towards the latter.
