wow, JUNGLE people do that too? that's weird, i wouldn't have expected that. it's not like jungle artists pose for promo photos with surly frowns on their faces, wearing spiked gauntlets.

Just replace "spiked gauntlets" with "an abundance of earth-toned clothing".

So I heard Pig Destroyer once when I searched for just plain Destroyer, no Pig somewhere, and I hated it. Just plain didn't get it, and couldn't listen to it. Tried Mastodon too, on download, and hated it. Didn't get it. Whatever; that's how these things go. That said, it is such a neat head trip to try and follow along with a discussion of records that I totally don't get, and really don't want to listen to. It's a fun exercise.

anyhow, continue!

But, do you usually listen to metal? When I first heard Leviathan at least, I thought it was fairly accessable (and, needless to say, likeable), so long as one's used to that sort of thing.

I went out and bought a Mercyful Fate album last night, and it's not difficult for me the way Pig Destroyer was. It's a bit funny, actually, the way the singer suddenly goes high-pitched. This is more like what I've heard before.

oh yeah, dude. king diamond CREATED that stereotype, and really he's one of the only metal singers who ever did it (him and rob halford of judas priest... maybe a couple other guys). but it makes more sense if you know that he was a classically trained soprano opera singer and had never sang rock music before mercyful fate.

which album did you get by them? do you like it?

The album I got is 'Time' and yes, I liked it, though I only listened to it a little bit. I've been spending more time with Pig Destroyer because I still haven't made any headway with it.

Nope, never have in the slightest. That what makes this all so perplexing :)

Well, from what I usually see, even the best metal is just crappy noise to people who don't like metal. Which is fine by me; different strokes for different folks.

I don't think it's a question of simply disliking metal -- this is not music that tries to seduce or enchant you, it's meant to be somewhat challenging or abrasive. Perhaps it's a question of getting to understand not only the music itself but also the culture around it. I went back again and bought Morbid Angel/Covenant. Funny how their album titles go in alphabetical order, like those cat mystery books. It was interesting to note some of the conventions of the genre that are discernable just from standing in the store -- the typography, the song and album titles, the cover art, the posture and dress and demeanor of the kids (and men in their thirties) in the aisles. It seems to be a very coherent, consistent genre.

Wikipedia - Grindcore
Wikipedia - Death Metal

That was helpful, thank you. Quite a few of the bands listed there, like Anal Cunt and Brujeria, are vaguely familiar to me by reputation, but since I learned of them from friends who are fans of experimental music, rather than any kind of metal as such, I did not really associate them with this genre. I think I will more to listen for this time around.

there's a decent article about black metal too, but didn't think it was necessarily relevant here.
