i mean, of course, i never think someone who's really into a hyped-band-of-the-moment is lying for cred. but thermo is right--hype can sometimes make it impossible for someone's first listen to a band to do anything but disappoint, and that's a bad deal.

And it's certainly important to note that there are plenty of blogs out there that aren't complicit in generating Second-Coming-of-the-Messiah-type hype, and it's important to reiterate, again, that expecting responsibility from individual bloggers or from the blogosphere as some imaginary collective is probably wishful thinking, because blogs are inherently editorial in nature.  It's just sad that this phenomenon exists, and I really question the presumption that unchecked, hyperbolic enthusiasm (even if wholly positive) actually serves its subject well.  Be it music, film, whatever.

On the other hand, expecting some sliver of responsibility from a site like Pitchfork, which peddles a very narrow and conservative editorial agenda in the guise of alleged journalism shouldn't be wishful thinking.

I sort of really like the fact that I'm so out of touch with indiedom that I can be at a party or a friend's house or just listening to the radio and hear a song and love it and not have any preconceived notions about how it's been received by like Pfork and the blogs and such, and I can form my own opinion.

sadly enough, i'm pretty sure i heard about these guys from pitchfork. by the time i bought a copy of it--after being floored by "oxford comma" on their myspace page--all my friends already had it. not sure why i missed the boat on these guys, but that's cool. i have the album now, and i really really love it, and coming from somebody who listened to a whole lot of afro-pop last year, their take on the style sounds pretty authentic. i admire a band that can make a full-length album with nary a weak track, and above and beyond that, these songs just have a really healthy, optimistic vibe to them that i believe i'm going to appreciate for a good while.

definitely a year-end top-10 (top-5?) contender.

Easy to be healthy and optimistic when you've got all the money in the world, no doubt

wasn't really joking, nor was i talking about "the poor" in general, more just pollo, because he's ever more self-righteous about his lack of money and i think it's a sad thing to be self-righteous about. not that i think there are any good reasons to be as such.

but then i haven't said that yet because it seems to be the hip thing these days

but i think the better idea would be to turn this into to CLASS WAR THREAAAAD

CLASS WAR THREAAAAD

pollo, you know i got love, but but you also know i hate bitching. self-righteousness has no place anywhere as far as i'm concerned. i like working quietly.

It's all good! I was only being half-serious. But for the record, I've always been self righteous about being poor. Class rage is one of the few and paltry compensations for being poor. Also one of the few that rich people can't co-opt very effectively.

First against the wall, &c.

class is one of the few issues where being angry and self-righteous is totally justified, 'cause it's pretty much the most important fucked-up thing w/r/t the way our country (and the whole damn world) functions.

there was a nice line in the pfork review about how "there's nothing more moneyed than having the luxury to find money tacky" and i think that's entirely true.

but, hey, it's still a killer record, and ultimately isn't that what really matters here?
