this thread has been created under the assumption that the old one is gone, and a new one hasn't yet replaced it.

so.

i made a deal on a board based around hardcore and record trading through which i will be getting the lp and 7 inch by second story window for $20. but i won't have them for weeks. really, who knows? that board is so constantly full of talk about people ripping other people off, i'm really kind of nervous about sending any money off. but it's worth taking a chance to get these records back (yes, i used to have them. no, i don't know what i was thinking when i sold them).

through the same board, i've also sold a really rare a minor forest tour 12 inch that i've had for 10 years. i'm getting $20 for it, too, so it amounts to a trade of one for the other, which is outstanding.

Porter Wagoner - Rubber Room
a bunch of Barbara Manning records
I replaced my copy of Mass Romantic, because my old one is back in Hoboken and scratched beyond belief, anyway. I also got Twin Cinema was because it was cheap and stuff.

I walked downtown to the used record store and got Blood on the Tracks on vinyl, and Teenage Fanclub's Thirteen and Good Life's Novena on a Nocturn on CD.  Then I was at the counter and they had a big stack of CD that had just come in that they hadn't gotten around to stocking yet.  Right on top of that stack was Mule Variations.  I grabbed it and was like, "Hey, can I get this too?  Is that allowed?  Because it's just sitting on this pile calling to me." and the cute girl working laughed and said I could get it and it would be $5.50.

A bunch of stuff I'd ordered weeks ago showed up in my mailbox these past few days:

The National Lights The Dead Will Walk, Dear

I wasn't sure about this one for a long time, but now I'm pretty certain this is quite a good album, despite the all-too-obvious Iron & Wine influence and the relatively bland vocals and sometimes awkward lyrics. It works because the contrast between the prettiness of it all and the creepiness of the words does manage to make an impression, and most of all it works because of the gorgeous backing vocals. The two least good songs are clearly the ones where the girl doesn't sing (including "Midwest Town" which they inexplicably chose as a MP3 download). So I've come around to really digging this, but I'm kind of sceptical as to whether this is going to work for their future records. We'll see!

Hallelujah The Hills Collective Psychosis Begone

Indie-rock from Boston. I haven't listened to this a lot yet because I'm not often in the mood, but this seems like a solid and fun record. I'm really happy these guys found a label - The Stairs were a great band.

Haul 1

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate (both at giveaway prices)
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
The Melvins - Stoner Witch
The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree (I'd been rocking out to difficult's copy for the extend of my tMG fandom)

Haul 2

Battles - Mirrored
Eyehategod - In the Name of Suffering
Eyehategod - Take as Needed for Pain

The Stairs were a great band.

Do you mean this band from Liverpool, England?

Or some other Stairs from Boston?

Actually, the record store clerk gave me a promo copy of that Secret Chiefs 3 when I told him I was having a hard time justifying buying it because I had all of the material on it except the three covers and the videos. I almost bought an Estradasphere album and a performance of Brahms' "ein Deutsches Requiem" too, but I had to cut myself off somewhere Wink

v/a "untitled" 3cd (A year and a half in the making... three labels (Public Guilt, Epicene Sound Systems and Underadar) teamed up to co-curate and co-release a 55 artist, 225 minute, 3CD compilation of some of the best noise / experimental / avant artists active today. Collected in a 5" x 6" x 1" kraft paper box and wrapped in a beautiful gold ink on red paper band)

In my mailbox yesterday:

Library Tapes - Feelings for Something Lost

First two listens imply that this is indeed probably even better than their first album, Alone in the Bright Lights of a Shattered Life. The song titles are mostly obnoxious and end in ellipses far too often, but that's really my only complaint at this point.

Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

Joanna Newsom & The Ys Street Band - Joanna Newsom & The Ys Street Band

Jane Siberry - Jane Siberry

The last one I've had on cassette for since forever and have been looking for on CD since, I don't know, 1992, but it was never, ever cheap. But yesterday I bought a tape player, so I could convert that tape to mp3, it and a couple others I love but couldn't listen to because I haven't had a tape deck in at least a few years (and even that was a crap ghetto blaster I never used). Therefore, today I found it on vinyl for reasonably cheap. The irony is not lost on me, but neither is the fact that I got the album on vinyl AND got a decent component tape deck, all for $10 less than the CD would have cost.

I'm curious about that Air but I've only heard ambivalent or negative things about it. How do you like it?

there's nothing to dislike. the album is hardly there at all. pretty ambient stuff.

i got it free as a promo. i definitely wouldn't have spent money on it.

love me some talkie walkie, though.
