You know, after listening to that Bathory album I bought a few days ago ("Nordland I"), I think that it's kind of underrated. I definitely think I'm going to have to seek out "Nordland II".

the tuss - rushup edge (mind, i got the 3LP rather than the cd)

growing - vision swin (has this awesome cut-out thing going on so half the shapes are actually holes you can see the inner sleeve through)

architecture in helsinki - in case we die (this was just ridiculously cheap so i couldn't not; also i figured it balanced my other purchases by containing singing and cutesy-ness)

and my final purchase was the "elephant gun" 7" by beirut, for which i can't find an image.

everything sounding good so far. i can already say that at least half of the tuss record is utterly outstanding.

They're decent albums. But I'm a real sucker for cheesy viking Bathory, I probably like that stuff more than the early BM.

cheapies:
Laughing Hyenas - Crawl
Young People - All at Once

Same here. I like the earlier stuff, and can see why it's influential, but I think it was done better elsewhere by other bands. On the other hand, I guess that's the same argument people use against "Nordland".

Didn't buy much the last couple of weeks. I'm in one of those moods again where I just want to go through my record collection and listen to records I haven't heard in years. Happens about twice a year. But the two most important albums that I did buy the last couple of weeks were:

Sam Baker "Pretty World" (cd)

Extraordinary singer/songwriter album, although he doesn't really sing, he more or less speaks. Very simple songs and beautiful lyrics that feel like a tribute to anything melancholic. The guy was almost killed in a train attacked by Peruvian guerrillas in 1986, surely makes for an interesting bio. Check him out if you like Townes van Zandt or something. It´s a private release so only through cdbaby and similar stores for now. Easily one of the best albums I’ve heard this year.

Sir Richard Bishop “While My Guitar Violently Bleeds” (lp)

I actually bought this record just for the amazing album cover and kick-ass title alone. Although I had seen him opening a show for Bonnie Prince Billy a couple of months ago so I already knew his music was very much worth it too. Turns out to be a killer record! Especially side-b is a huge trip. With this release and the latest James Blackshaw (and the reissue of the self-titled Jack Rose) we have some really amazing acoustic guitar albums this year. Now if only Paul Metzger would release some new material…

The Byrds, The Notorious Byrd Brothers.

The first song and the last song suck, but pretty much everything in between is awesome. It has a kind of washed-out, moody vibe. No immediate hooks or lyrics like their earlier albums. But I feel so mellow when I listen to it. I'm into it.

I'm doing that right now, too (mostly a function of being broke, in my case). With some of those records, it reminded me of why I don't usually listen to them, but then the other night I listened to Viva Last Blues for the first time in ages, and, wow.

Oh, this one passed me by completely! Hmmm.....

Anyway, no recent purchases for me right now, but the new Loren Connors and Spokane LPs as well the new Okkervil River album (the 2CD version) should arrive in the next week or two. I'm trembling in anticipation for the first two, and am mildly looking forward to the latter.

edit: although I think I haven't mentioned the promo CDs I picked up for free together with the Meg Baird LP I bought last week: Sarah Dougher's The Bluff and The Walls Ablaze, and the Rachel's/Matmos EP Full On Night.

That's one of my all-time favourite records! Definitely in my top 10. Lately I've been listening a lot to his 'Hope' EP. Some of his best stuff is on there I think.

the new Loren Connors
Hm, I didn't realise this was out already. Thanks for the heads-up, will have to order this one very soon!

The new Okkervil River is very good. I didn't get the 2 CD version, though.

yeah, i was pretty scared of it just because i love that unicorns album so much so i'm really happy that it's good - even if it did take me quite literally years to get up the courage to give it a listen!

even the 2 or 3 filler tracks are quite satisfying, i think. it's just a well-made album, is all.

ok, i can't post photos because both of these records are on such tiny labels that i can't find images anywhere on the internet. but on tuesday night, i saw ampere (from massachusetts) and daitro (from france), and bought records from them. from daitro, i got their us tour 7 inch, which features 2 songs on one side and a silkscreened image on the other. the covers are all personalized, and the roadie had to borrow a pen from someone to fill out the date of purchase and the city and venue where the show happened in the blanks provided on the cover. from ampere, i bought their split 9 inch with funeral diner, which is even weirder than the daitro 7 inch. on one side of the 9 inch, there's an etching that takes up the entire side. on the other side, ampere have two songs at the beginning of the side, which are so short that they take up maybe 90 seconds total. then there's an etched ring: at the top, it says "ampere", at the bottom it says "funeral diner", and there are etched flowers running around the ring inbetween the bands' names. then after that etched ring is the one funeral diner song, which is about 6 minutes long. then there's another etched ring of flowers, and then the space where a label would normally be, which is blank. it's one of the weirdest, most elaborate records i've ever seen.

total cost for these: $10.

Yes- his ...Modified Banjo CD is still a regular favourite round these parts.

Also, seconded on Hope and Viva Last Blues.  Reminds me I must get the turntable fixed.  Sad

OT: This arrived in the post yesterday:

Nathamuni Brothers - Madras 1974.  A south Indian brass band with clarinet leads that sound like Ivo Papasov trying his hand at ragas.  Fantastic stuff.  (The cover art is this photo with text over it, but I couldn't find a usable version of the cover online.  The photo is taken from the web page of Ethnomusicologist Robert Garfias.)

See here: http://www.museumfire.com/nathamuni.htm

Edit: Robert Garfias's page is well worth a look.  It seems to have loads of odd mp3s from his recordings around the world- Japan, Korea, Eastern Europe, etc.  I'm looking forward to investigating further.  http://aris.ss.uci.edu/rgarfias/

It is.  It surely is.

Limited to 500, afaik, but only $10 + p&p from the link above.  Apparently it's been getting good reviews and airplay (see the News section of the museumfire page), so if you're keen you'd better hop to it.  I got mine from Forced Exposure, fyi.

The link above also has mp3s if you want to sample first.

This arrived in the mail just now! Smile Haven't listened to any of it yet, so I can't say anything about the sound quality. Didn't come with any sort of booklet at all, which is a bit disappointing, but for $15, I'm not complaining.

Also, I picked these up used:

The At the Gates is a "limited edition" with a bonus disc split between At the Gates and Napalm Death called "Cursed to Tour." According to Wikipedia, it's a live EP. Cool!

I just noticed that the liner notes for the metal box can be found here. Nothing special... just a basic overview of each of the genres covered in the box.

A lot of the used metal I come across basically came from the private collection of this one dude who was way into metal, worked at a record store, and who moved out of town recently. He sold off a lot of his stuff, and little by little, it's making it out onto the shelves. Most people have no idea what it is, so it usually sticks around until I have a chance to pick it up Smile I did miss out on a couple of Death albums, though... and there's the first Deicide album that has been sitting there that I'm worried someone's gonna nab before I get to it Wink

Still, it's definitely nice to find it when I can.

Yah there's this guy at the store I shop at who buys things and within a couple weeks just sells them back.  Usually grim ass stuff.  He's a really big guy, my friend who works there calls him Troll.

I preordered the new High On Fire last night, hopefully on some neat color of vinyl.
