OK, so I think that Wedding Present album was too far into their decline.  *sigh*  this is what happens when I buy CDs while drunk.  maybe Bizarro next time?

I don't have any other Wedding Present at all.  and I usually am wrong, Andrew--hence the fact I lurk in the Earbuds form more than post...

I probably should have gone for a coherent album for a starter rather than a collection of singles, but, like I said, drunkish.

but Andrew, judgement aside, was there not at least a big shift at some point?

honestly, they're kind of different on every album. but then again, they're kind of always the same. it's weird. david gedge is definitely the only constant member, and the wedding present is really just him plus whoever he feels like playing with at that time. but yeah, if you were looking for the early super-jangly stuff, you should have started with "tommy" or "george best". probably if you do go through their stuff chronologically, you will come to appreciate the later stuff more. but i mean, honestly, i can't imagine any of the wedding present albums i've heard (i.e. nearly all of them) not having won me over if they'd been the first album by them that i'd heard. and actually, i started with "seamonsters", the one steve albini produced, which is by far their heaviest and least typical album, and i LOVED it. so there you go, i guess.

Bizarro is my favorite. George Best is almost as good, but I prefer Bizarro, probably because it was my introduction to The Wedding Present.

btw, I've gotten to listen to the CD a bit more, and there are definitely some really good songs on it, though also a few that rubbed me the wrong way at first.  but I won't give up.

I'm pretty excited for that Jason Anderson, and I encourage everyone to order it as well from ECA records.  It's $5 and the guy is completely lovable.  I know all the songs already from his performances, but now they come with a whole band so I'm very curious.

That Indian album is so heavy it knocked three piles of cds off my desk.
I don't remember listening to it much though, I think I found the songs a bit lacking.
Monstrous tone though.

All the Eld talk had me curious and the album was just sitting there cheap. I'm only really familiar with the bands' work since 'Below the Lights'.. so I'm enjoying the vikingness.

My artwork is not the same though - it's a limited edition, I got n°19 and there is a "payroll deduction statement" from the "Olga Coal Company" on the otherwise white cover. I'm off to listen now - very, very excited.

I already know the album is quite excellent, and so is the artwork, as usual. There's a bonus CD of solo demos which looks like the kind of thing you'll only ever listen once, but we'll see.

Also, they included a small bunch of bonus stuff in the package, but since another LPTJers is, as far as I know, still awaiting hers, I won't spoil any further!

I finally got these today as well! Except my copy of the Spokane LP has a bank account statement from the Florida National Bank on it (and it's no. 8/50, because I am a better fan than edison). It's also playing right now and sounding quite excellent.

The goodies in question were: A Temporary Residence Ltd. sampler ('Destroy Independent Music!') and a SC Distribution Sampler ('Spring 2007 Sampler'), an Okkervil River poster (Stage Names cover) and a Spokane flyer. Great haul, all in all!

I could have sworn I posted here a review I wrote of the Indian album.

By some chance it seems that I've become the go-to guy for drone-doom and sludge metal. And I suppose that's ok; this sort of style, lying as it does on the edge of certain metal conventions, sometimes demands a seasoned ear, and many an overheated adjective has been wasted on some Sunn 0))) record, the writer unable to get over the basic fact that they are so: slow, oppressive, heavy, awesome, depressing, et cetera.

And this record, The Unquiet Sky, too, while not in fact particularly droney, and not as slow as Sunn 0))), can induce that sort of surface-level reaction in many listeners. So lets dispense with them: this record is really heavy, and really distorted. It's slow, it's noisy, and the vocals are pretty out there—in fact, they sound closer to some black metal bands I could mention than anything else. The problems arise once we move beyond those facts and discover that the songs themselves aren't actually very interesting.

Is the production actually too good? Is the clarity and transparency (in addition to being clear, and transparent) too cold, too digital? It could be that what I miss, and what is in fact so crucial to the style is the harmonic richness and warmth that arise from a lovingly overdriven vacuum tube.

I cannot however, in good conscience, simply leave it at that. We cannot chalk this one up to a bad mix and move on, because if it is true that the sound did not immediately grab me at first listen, I persevered, as is my sacred duty. And this stuff is simply kind of boring. It all feels very thrown together; a dismal parade of un-riffs, and some yelling. Take for instance track four, "Los Nietos"—it starts, and 6:47 later it ends, and the next one begins. During that time they play a bunch of chords, there's a bit of drumming, and our boy screams a bit. The chords are, in various permutations, the same five chords picked out of the same hat as every other song. The band plods along until they stop for a couple seconds, the feedback comes in, there's a 3-hit fill, and then... Well, christ, I'm boring myself to tears here. You get the picture.

What does this music lack? Well, invention, I suppose. The band proceeds as if they had never actually heard sludge/doom before, but someone merely had related to them the basic outline and sent them off to the studio (though I know this not to be the case); if a comparison to fellow Chicago outfit Buried at Sea is appropriate—and I think it is—it's plain to see that what's missing from Indian, and what's rather important, is simply the well-crafted riff. Primary to the production, the speed, or the instrumentation (including a couple unfortunate interludes for solo oscillator), or the extended and self-indulgent squalls of feedback, is the writing, and it doesn't matter that everything else is precisely in place if the writing is not there—though it does make my disappointment greater.

And the new Tegan and Sara is officially my favorite album of the year, and anyone who doesn't like it is officially my enemy (Andrew?).

why are you singling me out? so far it hasn't impressed me the way "so jealous" did, but i really just haven't listened to it enough. i CERTAINLY wouldn't go so far as to say i "don't like it".

EDIT, 12 hours later: so i went home after posting this and listened to "the con", and i REALLY LIKED IT this time. in fact, i have now burned it to a cd and am listening to it again this morning.

Someone must have sold the majority of their collection to help pay for a burgeoning heroin addiction, 'cause yesterday there was a shit ton of GBV, the Fall, My Bloody Valentine, and a whole bunch of other great stuff in the used bin at Atomic. I picked up Earthquake Glue and Alien Lanes. I didn't buy any of the Fall records 'cause none of them were titles I recognized so I didn't know if they'd be good or not.
