Also, The Big Sleep, while quite possibly the most convoluted movie ever, is highly entertaining.

Yeah! I saw that outdoors in the Hollywood Forever cemetary. That was awesome.

I haven't seen I Wake Up Screaming, but now I want to.

I wrote down all of those and went to the video store and the only one I could find there was The Third Man.  Crappy video store.  I guess having older movies on the shelves means less copies of Norbert they can put there.  Anyway, I got The Third Man, and also some kind of chick flick for Mindy and also Pan's Labyrinth 'cause hey, I haven't seen it yet but I dig fantasy and I dig Guillermo Del Toro.  Has anyone seen his movie Cronos?  My buddy recommended it to me and I watched it a couple years back.  I think it's one of the more interesting takes on a vampire movie that I've seen.  Bizarre, yet there's a very cute relationship between the main character and his granddaughter that was really the heart of the whole movie for me.  Also, it has  Ron Perlman in it, so you know it's pure gold.

So anyway I'm about to watch The Third Man.  Thanks for the recs, people!

Are you watching it now?  I have a copy of that one.  I'll watch it with you!

Also Cronos is on my list of movies to see again because I have virtually no memory of it.

So, Le Cercle Rouge was very enjoyable, thanks Whit! Very different style of film to what I'm used to.

Bad Lieutenant is on next and I have no wish to ever watch that film again so i'm changing the channel.

The only noir film i've seen is The Dark Corner, which seems to be a bit less well known than the others mentioned so far. It was a good film from what I remember. I'm definitely attracted to noir, I just haven't got my shit together with regards to searching the stuff out.

With Lucille Ball!  That's a good one, too.

Still with The Third Man, Jim?   I love this scene!  "There isn't enough for two laughs."  Also, best character entrance in a movie ever!

I have had to pause a couple of times for family matters.  And now a friend IMed me to tell me about his wife getting her uterus removed 'cause of precancerous masses and stuff and it's pretty heavy.  On a related note, I believe I need another drink. Sad

That "Italy under the Borgias" bit, I've read it a bunch of times but this is the first time I've seen it.  Man, Orson Welles was the shit, that was really delivered well.  God I remember watching that fucking Nostradamus documentary he narrated so many times, everything made so goddamn much sense when Orson Welles was saying it even if it was complete bollocks.

It's well covered ground that I'm attracted to voices, right.  So you know I'm gonna agree with you about Orson Welles.  I have some pretty serious love for him.  I'd listen to him read my phone bill.

Hey, how can you guys post while you watch movies? Maybe I'm just a purist freak, but that's about the only time I disconnect myself from the internet.

Well, maybe movies, sex, showering, bathroom breaks, and exercise, but that's about it.

My TV is busted.  I watch the movies on my computer.  I got a whole lotta screen.

I have my television right next to the computer desk with a comfy chair within like three steps.  If I had thought it out more carefully, I could've set all this up in the bathroom and I'd never have to leave the room.

If I really want to watch a movie, I'll do it away from the computer, but I've seen The Third Man a lot.

Plus I'm on call 24x7 for my work, which involves computers and the internet, and so I'm never far from an internet-connected computer.  It's just gotten to be habit--not necessarily a good one--to pop on here every few minutes and see what's what.

Jim,

The list of B noir pictures that showed at Manhattan's Film Forum last spring:

http://www.filmforum.org/films/bnoir.html

And a list of the films in the "Essential Noir" program the theater did a little bit before that:

That list of "essential noir" is actually really, really good.  Also, I'm cursing myself for failing to mention Sweet Smell of Success in my initial list, because if you like noir for the dialogue, this is the definitive movie (except for Double Indemnity, which is the best movie ever tm.)

edit:  Actually, I'm gonna watch Sweet Smell of Success right now.  The Office celebratory marathon can wait.

Really, though, instead of watching "Gilda," just watch this clip:

And if "Gilda" counts as noir, then "Rain" with Joan Crawford counts and seriously, not enough people watch/talk about that movie.  So. Good.

That is the clip from Gilda.  Glenn Ford also reminds me that virtually all of the noirs with "big" in the title are good.  His is The Big Heat.  And the hair made me think of Veronica Lake, which points out that I failed to mention This Gun For Hire and The Blue Dhalia.  And Veronica Lake reminds me that I totally forgot about Lana Turner--The Postman Always Rings Twice is also essential.

Joan Crawford reminds me that I love the movie Johnny Guitar, but that's not noir related.  Sudden Fear, however, with Joan Crawford and Jack Palance could count as noir, and is a lot of fun.

I was actually pretty bored by The Postman Always Rings Twice.  I heart Veronica Lake, though.  Especially in Sullivan's Travels  (thought it's non-noir).  "If they knew what they liked in Pittsburgh, they wouldn't live in Pittsburgh."

haha this is two nights in a row of Chris and Chris getting drunk and talking about '40s actresses.  I'm starting to think I've got a Tyler Durden thing going on.

edit:  But yeah, the gf watches that "Gilda" clip at least twice a week.  She even made me learn "Put the Blame on Mame" on the guitar.
