i have to say the whole Osteen thing reminds me of that series of daniel quinn books with "story of B,"  but i enjoyed that book, and this all kind of sketches me out a little.

re: Apocalypto, I know I should be a fuckin prescriptivist, but I gotta say I'd just honestly prefer it if it said "no one can outrun his destiny" or "destiny will always catch up with you" or "you can't outrun destiny" etc

I think it's a literal translation of an ancient Mayan proverb.

Is "his" still considered the gender neutral pronoun? Or will people think me an asshole if I use it?

Sarah with the slam-dunk, or maybe the assist: Heart of the Game. Okay, I didn't think it was that great, but I still liked it an awful lot. It doesn't cut nearly as deep as Hoop Dreams, and you get the sense the director only figured out the real dramatic center four years or so into the seven year shoot, but I will 100% admit that none of that matters for shit by the time you reach the final championship game. I won't spoil the outcome, because who knows how many high-school-girls-basketball-documentary fans lurk here, but I gotta say, that was the most amazing coaching I've ever seen--in a tight, tight, state championship game, the dude vows to put in every single benchwarming scrub, and does it! I've never seen anything like that before, and it warmed my two-points-for-the-entire-season-10th-grade-JV former self to tears.

And Pook, I'd be interested in your thoughts on Deadbeat at Dawn, once you watch it. The director has also done videos for Skinny Puppy, Down, and Necrophagia. Just some trivia.

Um, I wouldn't do that.  It's likely to make for some awkwardness.

You're aware that it's a "pink" movie, right?  This is strange in itself too, mainly due to the fact that there are no shots of penetration, but plenty of splooge.

Oh and Mike, you might dig it for some of the visual effects, otherwise though, meh.

And as for last night, why did no one tell me to see Half Nelson sooner?!

Oh, I saw Apocalypto recently, too.  I wish I could say my biggest problem was with the ending.  The whole movie just kinda bored and annoyed me.  How was it possbile for me to be bored during a movie in which a man GETS HIS FACE CHEWED OFF BY A JAGUAR?  I do not know, but it happened.  I'm as surprised as the rest of you.

Knowing that Mel Gibson was probably jerking off while watching the rough cut makes it hard to enjoy the violence in his movies anymore.

i thought the movie was action-packed enough, and it kept me on the edge of my seat (guys i was really stoned) but the whole thing felt kinda racist to me and then when they had the big reveal at the end (that we JOKINGLY predicted) it was just too much for me.  i stood up, said, "that's it, i'm done with this movie," and i walked out of the room.

I finally had a chance to watch Ball of Fire with Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper.  She's great in this.

For the record, she's pretty much great in everything. She is nutty.

Here is my actual response, okay?

"Wouldn't it be 'God hates Jews and fags,' then?"

Or, you know, etc.

I generally use "his", too, because I think it's ridiculous to say his/her just to pander to someone's perceived slight.  I mean, get over it already.

edit:  Also, I love hannah.

I use "they", and will continue to do so until English comes to its dang senses and gets a proper gender-neutral prooun.
