More later, but this was GREAT.  I don't know how it would be for someone who is not a total Spanish Civil War nerd, but for me it was like a two hour long orgasm, essentially.

'Cept the end, which was a major bummer.

Actually many of my orgasms are like that anyway

(the sadness at the end, not the whole two-hours-long thing)

I was going to see the Lives of Others tonight but I got cancelled on. Yesterday I saw Oceans 13. I think I laughed a few times. It was a nothing movie though. The day before that I saw Becoming Jane. What a poorly directed film. It was like a first year film-student trying to show us how many different camera angles he knew.

edit: oh fuck. also. i saw Stand By Me for the first time. Unbelievable. How did I miss that when I was growing up. Also. Oliver Stone's J.F.K. fucking great film.

I feel like I missed something. . .

the entire original murk era. but don't worry about it.

last night i watched "raiders of the lost ark" for the millionth time. it was the first time i'd seen it in such a long time, and i basically found myself noting ways in which the movie resembles "casablanca", of which there are many. it was decent, i suppose, but fuck... all of my actual immersion in legitimate movie culture sure has wrecked popcorn movies for me.

If. . . finally got a proper dvd release (Criterion).  I'm watching it right now.

No shit? Is O Lucky Man! out too?

Alas, no.  Netflix still says "release date unknown".

But you know what is coming out on DVD? Cruising! It's not Friedkin's director's cut--the originals of an alleged 40 minutes of largely hardcore gay leather s/m sex disappeared in an 80s corporate merger that also saw the leftover footage from Yentl vanish as well--but it is going to restore clarity to some really graphic action that's obscured by smoke effects on existing prints.

I've never actually seen this movie, and I really want to. It seems clear the critical pendulum has shifted drastically--the accusations of homophobia from 1980 are now seen as knee-jerk dismissals by a vanilla gay movement ashamed of its own kink affiliate--and it's coming in for a revaluation. I'm almost tempted to go rent the out-of-print VHS version because I have no patience or self-control, but I think I'll wait for the DVD in September.

Has anyone actually seen this film?

Dude, I was totally here for that.  I'm just wondering if there were edits to that exchange. (Knowing full well that there must have been, I suppose what I'm really wondering is what they were.)  Cool

Me Chris?  I have no idea what you're referring to.  (I'm not being coy.  I'm genuinely perplexed.)

Oh, that.  I acknowledged it in the "sig file graveyard" thread.  I didn't credit you exactly, but I did own up to stealing it.  um. . . Thanks!

Oh. Sig file graveyard. I don't know too much about that. But how did you get the cedille on the c? (I can't even spell cedille correctly because I also don't know how to make an accent aigu on the e.)
