I just moved from there to here (chicago) a couple of weeks ago.  I lived there from January 2007 to then.

Ohh.  Yeah, it took about a year for me to start not hating it here.  There are good things and good people, you just have to look hard.  Actually it has gotten a lot worse sense I moved here in 2003.  I live downtown and they are building all these condos on the waterfront and some of the better small businesses have been bought out so there's this eerie ghost town feeling most nights.  I wouldn't still be here if it wasn't for school and friends, so I don't blame you for leaving.

What were you here for?

Trying to save up money to go to school (where I am now).  My dad lives down there so I was abusing free rent and saving as much as I could while working ludicrous hours at a shitty retail job.  Don't get me wrong there were decent things about Ft. Myers but self-imposed conditions of frugality which meant no regular access to a car, no 'doing fun things', etc.

That sounds really lame dude, sorry you had to spend 8 months of your life like that.  A car is definitely a necessity here.

God, I fucking hate Ft. Myers. Every time I was there with andronicus I wanted to die.

The beaches are nice, though!

It's funny though because I am missing Florida really hard right now. I know that everything in Chicago is 500x better but man, I'd kill some peeps to see my family and friends and to eat at Dandelion or Antonio's*.

I go to Dandelion all the dang time when I visit O-town!  Best(only) vegan chili around!  They are doing so much with it now, like putting in an organic garden out front, they painted it bright green, it's great.  What's your favorite tea?  I went to howard middle, which is right up the road.

Yay, I love Dandelion so much! I normally always get moroccan mint. Their iced coffee is great but I only like it if Matt makes it. The chili is so so good. And the root beer floats are awesome.

but then, if you ask me, so are bands like weekend nachos and all the other let's-relive-1982 bands. i mean, i'm sure their shows are fun and they're nice people, but i just feel like bands like that have nothing new to offer. they just sound like carbon copies of records i owned when i was a teenager.

preach it, brother.

weekend nachos = boring. the mke hc kids eat that kind of shit up as well. it's too bad.

i had a pretty good discussion the other night with my friend eric about how fucked up the hardcore scene here really is, how stagnant and close-minded. i imagine richmond is much the same way.

A damn shame.  I know you won't be missing the Lucero show in November though right?

It's pretty much like that here, too.  there's maybe one group who does anything but they've imploded in recent years because of drama and bullshit.  It's a small town so everyone has screwed everyone else over at least once.  it is hard getting people to come to shows anymore.  we used to have a women's collective and do protests and food not bombs all this stuff, but everyone is jaded now and either trying just to get by day to day or leave.  I mean, that's what I'm doing so I can't complain.

Heather: I need to try one of their rootbeer floats!  I like their elixers and the buddha tea the best.

yeah, peacocks, there's a lot of apathy and lack of concern over social causes in richmond too. the few of us who still care are bummed, but we're swimming upstream trying to do much of anything about it. i'm trying to start a venue with 6 friends of mine, and we want to do it legally and aboveboard, and everyone's all "nah, why don't you just rent a warehouse and throw illegal shows until the cops shut it down in a year." well, we don't want it to get shut down in a year, we want it to be around for years to come. we either hear that or "are we gonna be able to bring beer?" no, virginia state law prohibits that. "fuck the LAWS, maaaaan..." sigh.

Oh man that is disapointing.  That kind of attitude is only progressive if progress is actually being made by having it.  Once being against authority hinders what you're trying to do to make things better, which it was my impression the whole diy hc scene was mostly about, it's just for show like everyone is stuck in high school.  ugh let's drop it.

oh, man, I tempted for like 8 years.  OK, most of them were at the same place, but still--temp agencies!  blech!  once they sent me to a Levis fashion show to iron jeans so they'd be all toasty and crisp for the model ladies to wear.  heh.

How was King Lear last night?  (SPOILERS FOLLOW)

+  Got to meet girl!  And she was great!

-  I smelled bad from walking around Manhattan in an underslept overcaffeinated sweaty daze all day.

+  girl smelled very nice.

+  Ian McKellan was a pretty good Lear, all blustery and pissy and losing his mind.

-  I got sort of uncomfortable when audience members chuckled at moments I found deeply sad (such as Lear asking, with childlike innocence, if the filth-encrusted Tom O' Bedlam was a lunatic wanderer because he, too, gave his kingdom to his daughters).

+  Guy who played Kent was a totally kickass Kent!

-  Guy who played Kent was a totally shitty Caius.

+  The actor playing Cornwall was remarkably good, adding some really pleasing dimension to someone who's written as just kind of an uninteresting psychopath.

-  Who the fuck decided that Cordelia's best played as a petulant Eliza Doolittle?  What the fucking fuck?

-  Gloucester seemed pretty pained when they cut out his eyes, in the same way that one would seem pained when one gets a traffic ticket or realizes their milk is past the expiration date.

-  The sound and musical cues were like every awful high-school Shakespeare production ever made, totally boring and uninteresting.

+  Except for the soldiers that danced like Russian peasants / The Fonz.  That was pretty rad.

-  You know that part at the end, where Lear's like, "And my poor fool is hanged"?  And it's kinda ambiguous, cause maybe he's talking about the Fool (who disappeared without explanation), or maybe he's talking about Cordelia?  Yeah, they decided to actually hang the Fool onstage in this production.  Just so there couldn't possibly be any confusion, I guess.  Thank god, WHEW!

+  Goneril's voice made me want to sex her wild.

+  The script is still better than at least 99 percent of the rest of humanity's cultural output.

NEUTRAL:  We saw McKellanCock.

NEUTRAL:  They replaced the line "Thou whoreson zed" with "Thou whoreson zee".  Apparently, they thought the British pronunciation of the letter Z was the least comprehensible part of that line?  Weird.

NEUTRAL:  The trail mix I ate at intermission was bland.

How Was King Lear Last Night: girl's reply

+ I got to meet Greg Nog and coldforge last night, and they were both great! It's weird when you meet people that you sort of think you know, but haven't actually met, plus I'm flat out awful at small talk and prefer to just listen to other people. This worked out well for me because both coldforge and Nog are great conversationalists, and I felt totally comfortable and was really happy to be there. Also, if Greg smelled bad, I didn't notice at all. I didn't have any trail mix, but it did say "healthy" on the container. (True story, when I got home, I realized that I was hungry, so I had some trail mix.)

I agree with just about everything Greg said about the cast, actually. Goneril is my favorite character in the play, and I also loved the actress who played her.

except:
- I didn't get the Russian thing at all. I thought it was a really odd choice.
