Michael Moore to thread. Releasing wide next month.
They're already lined up the rebuttals - an ex-Cuban doctor saying that Cuba have a seperate health system for foreigners coming in, and other things of the like. I really wish Moore wouldn't give these people a gap to attack him through, but I've kinda given up on that happening.

i've given up on the guy doing work that isn't easily assailable too, but i STILL have to love him, because if nothing else, he gets americans talking about shit like this when other people aren't able to. the horrible health-care situation we're in right now is pretty much NOT in the public consciousness, and if this has even half the effect where getting people thinking is concerned that fahrenheit 911 did, well, i'm ok with that.

While the utter and contemptible spinelessness of the Democratic Party hardly constitutes news, neither does it ever fail to rouse my anger. Supporting a 30% increase in abstinence-only funding wasn't enough; withdrawing a bill to mandate the availability of emergency contraception at all military bases, that's where Democratic "leadership" is headed. It's almost as brilliant as allowing a big cadre of reactionary federal judges to the bench in order to make sure we don't end up with a five-man rightwing bloc vote on the Supreme Court. Winning strategies everywhere!

Really, it seems that everybody has suddenly forgotten that Fatah used and endorsed exactly the same tactics Hamas has right now. Hamas maintains the social support networks in Gaza and is swimming in popular support, but now Gaza is to be cordoned off as a 'terrorist territory', ie the Einsatzgruppen are going to be let loose.

Is there any hope at all for this situation? It seems like the only way anything halfway good might happen is if the US suddenly decides that, strategically, it's not in its interest to keep supporting Israel. That would leave Israel completely isolated among world opinion (assuming Britain would mimic US policy, which I'm sure they would).

I think Gaza is going to disappear off the map and turn into a new Grozny.

For real.  We finally got that elusive "Two-State Solution."

Japanese company offers cheap mortgages to people in 'high value' jobs.

The headline say 'bright' and 'intelligent' Japanese, but your value is judged on your skills at English and computers. Anybody taking any bets for when wages paid in kind and company towns will become prelavent again?

I think - I hope - Hamas will turn out to be as resourceful and competent as Hezbollah has and drive the Israelis back. Of course, Hezbollah were fighting on terrain more valuable and defendable than coastal desert.

News is so bloody depressing. . .

anyone taking bets on which we'll do first:  blow up most of the planet or just destroy the environment so as to make most of the planet uninhabitable?

I agree.  Particularly with the level of popular support Hamas has, and with how deeply entrenched they are in local institutions.  I don't think it's *possible* for the Israelis to really root out Hamas at this point.

I'm pretty sure my government's take on the whole deal is, "Just wait patiently for the Israelis to rebuild the Temple so we can all enjoy the Rapture."

The sad thing is, that's only half-a-joke.

edit:  girl, depends on how the '08 election goes.  If the GOP wins, we're almost certainly invading Iran, and then it's Blow Up City.

Yeah, no matter what the Israelis are going to retain all the valuable land and water. I don't read much on this topic because it seems like such a lost cause. Even if there's some kind of reasonable two-state solution the Palestinians will get screwed and remain a miserably poor 3rd world country with no hope for a better future.

It's not really that surprising that the US & EU would choose to support the secular faction against the radically Islamic one. Can't negotiate with religious fanaticism.
