Yeah, I've grown a beard since then, though.

I'd like to mention that I had that problem with LPTJ a couple times the other day (where the stylesheets don't load).  It was weird, but went away when I refreshed.

OK so - does the advice in this thread still hold, ~3 years later?  Because my workhorse cheapo crt started making a high-pitched noise this morning, and I'm overdue for a new one (and a new keyboard and mouse) anyway.  I'd like to basically get the nicest monitor I can get for <= $250 or so, if that exists.

If you're willing to spend up to $250, you can grab a damn sweet monitor of pretty impressive size. Like this one: http://goo.gl/WqGa
Name brand, 24", 1080p resolution, $217 shipped. You should poke around on DealNews and see if there's anything else that strikes yer fancy, but that's a good buy righ'thurr.

hmm, the deal on that one only lasts until Monday, and I'm not going to be able to buy something until next Friday or so.  I have a clunky shitty monitor that doesn't make noises that I can use in the meantime, but I definitely need to get a decent one.

EDIT: I have actually been looking at newegg and such, but I'm just not really up on what's "good" in a monitor these days.  I mean, that's probably pretty clear from the fact that I've had a crt monitor all these years.

Also, depends on what you're using it for.

I rock two of these. You can pick up two for $15 cheaper than pollo's suggestion and get a hell of a lot more real estate. I can keep two full Word windows (rough notes on one, draft on the other) + a browser + a pdf all up at the same time, which I find a pretty sweet way to do research. But if you're going to be all graphics-intense, that wouldn't be the wisest choice.

Yeah, graphics is one of the things I'm kind of taking into consideration, because I sort of feel like I want to have something nice in that department (not that I *need* it, but if it can be purchased for the kind of money I have, I would rather have it than save the money and not have it).

Also, I need a new keyboard, as the keys on the spacebar row and the row above it sometimes need some abuse to actually work.  But that I'll probably just get from Apple.

The graphics are good enough for my needs, but my needs are pretty light.

I am, however, considering your suggestion.  Because, while I would prefer higher graphics/resolution and all, I do kind of have a boner for multiple monitors.  Not that I have the slightest clue where I'd find the space for both of them, but hey.

I love having multiple displays, especially for the kind of work ella describes, but if you're looking for a single monitor solution with good graphics capabilities, I'd definitely look for something 20-24", with a native resolution of at least 720p, in the $200 range.

Yeah, it looks like there are a number of things in the $200 range that are 19"-24" do 1080p (I barely know what that means).  Mostly I just don't want to spend money on a thing thinking it will be nice and look good when I really just don't understand what I'm spending my money on.

If there's much of a price difference between the 720p models and the 1080p models, you're safe going with the 720. You wouldn't notice a difference unless you had them side by side.
