I will gladly trade spanakopita for yummy (ethiopian maybe? hard to tell) food as well.

I also am pretty terrific in a kitchen though I am a meatosaurus mostly rawr.

those are some really cool photos Trousers and Pat.  the first one kind of reminds of the Lewis Baltz's photography

 http://www.eastman.org/ar/strip87/htmlsrc2/baltz_sum00002.html

i like the mud one too.

Yeah I found an old roll of film and got back all these desolate little pictures.

but wow, those Lewis Baltz photos are intense. Thanks for the link.

Indian!  And update: it was delicious.  Midway through, though, I freaked out because I realized I hadn't bought enough spinach, nor had I blanched the tomatoes for the sauce, as my recipe called for.  I was going to give up on the whole thing, but then realized the pizza sauce in my fridge should work all right instead.

"Man," I thought, "Some actual Indian chefs are probably rolling their graves right now."  And the slapdash Americanness of the whole affair got me hard, and I decided to go all-out; I replaced the garnish of heavy cream with ranch dressing.  HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW, INDIA

After talking to coldforge about Irish typeface in the Random thread, I snapped a few examples while rambling around the city with The Lady recently.

For your reading pleasure:

Páirc Árd Lui.

Bóthar Cnocán Éadan.

Árdán Cnocán Aoibhinn.

Bóthar Nortbruc.

Raghnallach.

Scoileanna na mBráthar gCríostamhail.  (Christian Brothers Schools [I think].)

Aoibhinn.

this word amused me greatly. i have a guess as to how to pronounce the syllable that begins with the b, but the first syllable... no clue.

I'll take a crack at this. It goes 'ao', which is a diphthong /ee/, followed by a slender glide 'i', which is just to put the following consonant in a slender context and thus not pronounced, followed by 'bh', which is a lenitized b—pronounced slenderwise it goes /v/. It's clear sailing after that, so my guess—with absolutely no actual knowledge, of course—is "eevin".

EDIT: It would appear, according to some other random page of Irish sayings somewhere on the internet, that I might be correct. How exciting. It actually seems like it might be relatively systematic.

I was going to say what coldforge said, but not fancy-like! So, uselessly. Anyway, my method: the name "Aoife" is pronounced "Eefa" and the name "Siobhan" is "Shi-vahn." Like magic!

Go to the head of the class, Mr Forge.  Top marks.

Also, hannah- the latter would be more precisely Shi-vawn, but you were damn close.  I don't feel so mysterious any more. Sad

The talk of algebra in the annoyed thread reminded me of the t-shirts my AP Calc class put together at the end of my senior high school. Goody goody gumballs.

The front of each shirt had our school's name and "Varsity Calculus," and the back of each had a name of the student's choosing (usually his or her last name) and then a number, also of the student's choosing.

I went with my nickname. Twice.
