I just thought tall darkhaired dude... and he's kneeling in the way you are kneeling in the NY LPTJ meetup photo that was around while back.

WOAH, Spoiler! but you're right... in fact, in the minutes since my 1st post, I grabbed the books off the shelf to compare the picture here with the drawing from the text piece at the end of chapter 2, and it's not totally clear, since the 1939 uniform (pictured in the "Christmas party" photo) isn't clearly front-on, but by 1942 (next page) he was totally military-ed out, so maybe I'm wrong. I just pictured him being a little "clownier" at this point, and the increasing Military appearance is sort of catalyzed by the event you mentioned.
Maybe I should re-read these books.

I don't think there was ever one single shot of the whole photo in the comic, but parts of it were shown in various frames; here's a very rough composite, for comparison's sake.

That's... dare I say it? Really very well done.
Goddammit do NOT get my hopes up for this movie!!!
i agree on all counts.
by the way, have you guys ever looked into the charlton comics characters the watchmen were based on? the comedian was based on
peacemaker
, who is a recurring character in the current blue beetle series, which i read regularly.
realizing this connection kind of blew my mind.
EDIT: speaking of which, nite-owl is based on the first two versions of the blue beetle. also mindblowing, though i think i always sorta subconsciously knew that.

I'm in the process of reading all of these series
Hellsing
by Kouta Hirano
Hot Gimmick
by Miki Aihara
100 Bullets
by Brian Azzarello
The Swamp Thing
by Alan Moore
Batman: No Man's Land
by various writers
and now
Sandman
by Alan Gaiman
two of them are still going, i gotta go finish the rest of them because there are so many series that i wanna start reading now, they keep piling up, and i know i'm forgetting at least one.
edit: and the one i'm forgetting is
Gotham Central
, have only read the first 2 collected editions out of 5 and enjoyed them very much.

I recently started
Sandman
, and
Y The Last Man
by Brian K. Vaughan, which are both pretty great so far.
And I read
Ghost World
today. It was okay, but I swear they do nothing but complain throughout, which I found a)unrealistic and b)annoying.
Also read more James Kolchaka, namely
Pinky and Stinky
which was adorabubble

hahahahahaha. maybe you're too close to the subject to get a proper view of it, but don't you think teenagers pretty much complain constantly? i know i did.
in other news, i read 11 issues of the exterminators yesterday. i'm all caught up now. how i ever let myself get so far behind in that series, i have no idea, but the catching up did a lot to remind me of how great it actually is.

ok, so i made list of all the comics i want to read (skimming through this thread helped) that my library has (thank you internet!) and it contains 28 one-offs/graphic novels/collected editions of a series in a single book and 17 series that are collected in more than one book, both ongoing and finished. all combined it's easily like 150+ books, which is good because that means the library will satisfy my comics need for a long while.
yay, comics rule!

Maybe, I complain a lot as well, but there are long conversations in between with friends that consist of much OH MY GOD THAT'S AWESOME AND THAT'S AWESOME AS WELL AND HAVE YOU READ AWESOME ISN'T IT AWESOME AND THAT PHILOSOPHICAL POINT YOU JUST MADE IS AWESOME etc. I mean, me and mine are a fairly unusual bunch, but still.

Man, now that right there is a comic book I sure would enjoy myself to reading.

I don't want to be rude, but I was being sarcastic. Not that your friends aren't probably lovely people, but in my experience comic books that consist entirely or nearly entirely of smart, handsome people being clever to each other and agreeing that lots of things are cool (Jeph Jacques, from hell's heart I stab at thee) tend to make my eyes turn red.

I thought they were red in the first place

I'm not sure I want my art to be just like real life
Sometimes I'd rather it not be anything like it

A healthy balance between young people complaining and saying "That's awesome!" all the time, mixed with a total disregard for reality? What you're looking for is the Scott Pilgrim comics.

Goddamn, Scott Pilgrim is good. Lucy lent them to me, and I'm only on 3, but man. MAN. Sex Bob-omb.

This comic shop opened up right near me, and it's run by a guy named Gideon. When Westphal told me about the place, I was like, "Wait... Gideon... New York... comics... That guy is THE FINAL BOSS!"
Volume 3's pretty excellent, but I think Volume 4 might be my favorite since the first one. Scott learns how to gain Experience through a Job System.

Only 4, yep. But O' Malley's still truckin' along, putting out roughly one per year. Maybe it's just 'cause so many people burn out before their promised stories are done (
REPLACEMENT GOD
, I AM READY TO FIGHT), but I've been delighted by the relative regularity of the Scott Pilgrim output. Also, Roy, I'm sure this tickles your fancy: the underage high-school girl continues to be part of the story throughout Book 4.
Also, Book 4 opens with a full-color section at the beach!
