I am in favor of Onstad getting money from any and all possible angles.  In fact, I'm going to go sign up to be a patron right now.

EDIT:  Wait, did they stop the patron thing?  I can't find a link anywhere.

There should be a 'subscription for web 1.0 curmudgeons' option where I don't feel like I'm wasting a perfectly good subscription because I don't want minute-by-minute updates to my phone and add shit to my flickr pool and twitter me and facebook my myspace.  Perhaps Onstad will consent to being pen pals with me and I will tell him about my latest whittling project and share with him my private ideas.

Nick Fury's return issue barely had any Nick Fury Nick Furying around. I was disappointed. I wanted to get excited about the last page of Secret Invasion, but then I remembered how disappointing this one was. The decompression in this story is driving me nuts. Same with Final Crisis. But Final Crisis Reqium almost made me cry. And that is coming from someone who almost got his ass kicked in the 6th grade for saying that the Martian Manhunter sucks.

to marvel nerds, comics suck unless they are about time traveling mutants with enormous guns

My roommate and I went on a like ten-minute long imagined conversation the other day where he played the role of Bishop and I played the role of Cable.  I was actually a little surprised at how easy it turned out to be for two dudes to riff on that for ten minutes with a bare minimum of creativity.

Those are two characters that I've never identified with scintillating dialogue though, nah mean?

I am a fan of Deadpool as well. I should get back into some of those earlier stories he was in.

I went book sorting preparatory to the downtown community ministry bookfair, because I am a good citizen, and because it means I get first dibs on any books I want. A too much coffee man, "Goodbye chunky rice" and John porcellino's "perfect example" for a dollar each. Sweeeeet

I'm going to get a couple comic books tomorrow!

I'm looking for something good, I'm completely open here people... I don't want it to be Batman, but any superhero stuff would be ok... I'm looking for something recently released that is awesome. No graphic novels. Well maybe.

I'm just kinda drawing a blank on what to get! Suggestions? Broad parameters!

How do you feel about the Gotham Police force?  'Cause I'm on the record as saying that Gotham Central fucking rules.  It's like Law and Order, plus the occasional supervillain.

No graphic novels. Well maybe.

Pick up JLA: Rock of Ages.  It's the first four issues of Grant Morrison's run, and it's fucking AWESOME.  Straight-up superhero melodrama in the late nineties style.  Not complex, but bold and fun.

EDIT:  Also, it should only be six bucks.  $6 for 4 issues.  That's cheap!

Grant Morrison's Batman: Rip is ratcheting up to insanely amazing, and is actually both making up for and building on the lackluster beginnings of his run on the book.

I need to read that.  Grant Morrison can get a bit out of control sometimes, but I'm always confident that it's building up to Something Fucking Amazing.

After my advice to rockme the other day, I started flipping through JLA: Rock of Ages.  I'd forgotten just how much I loved that.

Yeah, the first half of his run so far was that awful "Morrisson going wacky-sauce" stuff that didn't add up to anything. The whole Batman and Son arc was just awful. But now that he's into R.I.P., it's starting to look like the whole thing has been purposeful and subtly working toward this uber-Morrison storyline.

Has this happened yet?

Quote from: me
It takes a lot of time and planning for him to think of new ways to break the fourth wall and insert himself directly into the story, you know.

I predict he will sit down and have a chat with Batman and tell him that his parents were only killed 'cause a comic book writer was fucking with him, and then he'll bring them back to life and Bruce Wayne will regress to childhood.

No, dude, he can't do that again.

He did do one issue I thought was brilliant that was basically a pulp-magazine style prose story with crazy illustrations. It was about the Joker, I forget what issue it was.

Check this out - http://geniusboyfiremelon.blogspot.com/search/label/m-bats

Timothy Callahan, who recently wrote the first book about Grant Morrison, is doing hardcore annotations for each issue of Morrison's Batman. You ARE missing things.  Razz

Pages 20-22: Bruce Wayne, using the magical shopping cart of the imaginary Honor Jackson, sews himself a new costume. As I mentioned in my look at Batman #113 yesterday, the lines, "...it would be far easier to consider this a dream. But how can I? For in my hand...I hold the Bat-Radia," come word for word from the Zur-En-Arrh space-Batman story in that issue from the 1950s. And, of course, when Batman says "I am the Batman. The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh," and reveals his fancy new costume, it's the one the alien Tlano was wearing in Batman #113. All of which, apparently, were Batman's delusions in the past--Black Casebook stuff and all that.

Jesus, I thought that was satire. Inside baseball, fucking hell. When does encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture schlock from the 60s stop being the chief criterion for who gets to be an auteur genius?
