It's been at least five years since I've played Lumpy Gravy, but that one guy's horribly obnoxious laughter came rushing back at me like an aural nightmare from last night. Also this new Tegan & Sara album conclusively doesn't do much for me, though I'm not sure why I ever thought it would. I used to tease my ex for liking them, then I saw an Amoeba instore and was sort of swayed, but now I'm realizing it just wasn't meant to be.

Also, while I like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend a lot, Kerosene is way, way, way better.  Almost perfect.  It *is* even more "Nashville" though.

Oddly enough I pulled out Southern Rock Opera for some reason this week and have been having an excellent time remembering how awesome it is.

I doubt I'll find out, but yeah, SRO is great. I've never listened to any of the DBT's solo stuff, I suppose I should.

this whole flirtation may also have had something to do with me hyping "the con" a bunch on my blog. i really really like it. i liked "so jealous" slightly better, but "the con" is still really really good. bummer that you didn't dig it.

Cassadaga has yet to leave much of an impression on me, but 50 songs worth of Chuck Berry sustained my lengthy cleaning efforts today.

Also NP: Bob Mould Band, LiveDog98, The Forum, London UK, which is an official release but for which I can't find any cover-art in two minutes of lazy online searching. And which has a little too much circa-98 material, though I still like it a lot (I also like 1998-vintage Mould, but it's definitely a weak period relative to his other work--probably his weakest, really).

Eef Barzelay - Bitter Honey
M83 - Digital Shades Vol. 1

Listened to these to and from work today. Both are very good. Barzelay's sometimes smart-ass lyrics can't hide the heartfelt sound of the songs, and that M83 album is one of the better ambient albums I've heard. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.

It's only noon, but today is shaping up as a British-themed day apparently. The Swell Maps are an old fave, but Dizzee was something of a revelation--I saw him live in about 2003 and totally wrote him off on the basis of a lackluster performance, which was pretty unfounded considering that it was a free outside noon show on the UCLA campus, which is a poor setting to evaluate anyone. But a few cursory listens of this album over the past few months hadn't really done much for me, and I only connected to it today while driving.

Momus, on the other hand, I've been a fan of for a decade and had a burned copy of this--Don't Stop the Night--for a few years without ever playing it once. I finally did, and it's terrible, a mix of tinny synth-pop and blandly lecherous lyrics, so I figured it must have been his debut. I'm surprised to see it came after The Poison Boyfriend and Tender Pervert, both of which I like a lot. I can't figure out what he was thinking here.

I threw a bunch of black metal on my iPod last night, so I reckon I'll be listening to it a lot today. I put "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" on there as well, but after "A Matter of Life and Death," I feel pretty drained re: Maiden.

I really like 'Don't Stop The Night'! But I agree with your description of it. I think he went a lot further down the 'tinny synthpop' road after that too.
