I made an empty facebook page for a similar reason, but without the drinks or sex.  Myspace doesn't particularly interest me, though I think both of my brothers are on it and I occasionally look up bands there.

I set up a virb page, but never finished it and haven't looked since.

I will confess to having a livejournal page that I am using to make myself write about architecture now and then.

Flickr helps me keep up with some friends.

mostly, though, I just can't keep up with kids these days and all their crazy technology.  old dog, new tricks and all that.

I have used facebook to find people to pre-small talk with before school started. I have mixed feelings about this being a positive thing! EXAMPLE: there is a thread right now in the class of 2011 for people to brag about not having completed their summer reading. It was a very short novel and the author is coming to talk with us. It would seem that no one has read it, and they feel that college isn't about READING it's about the EXPERIENCE. This manages to annoy and comfort me, because on the one hand SHUT UP AND READ and on the other "haha! I read without bitching and am not going to brag about it either way! I win!"



(Really I am annoyed because I tried to go to bed early and then woke up a 1, ready for a full night of sleeplessness and tears. disappointing!)

I don't have any hot water in my apartment right now. Can't say I'm a fan.

Recently, we had hot, but no cold water.  I realized how much more okay I am with only having cold water.  A person can at least take a freezing-cold shower without incurring actual damage to the flesh.

Well, just to clear this issue up, the water heater was shot. By 10:30 pm, we had a new water heater and hot water again. In general, my landlord gets the big fat golden "Thanks For Behaving Like a Human Being Instead of a Landlord" award for his dedication to not being an ass.

Right now the thing that has me stabbingly annoyed is the fact that I have two sizable-enough-to-be-annoying projects due tomorrow and none of the fonts I previously depended on are working. Not in the least. Don't ask me why. According to various parts of the interweb, it is due to the fact that while I have all the Postscript Type 1 files, I don't have any of the suitcase files that go with it. However, I know this to be bullshit because not only did I install these fonts previously but I used them to design a number of things before my hard drive went to shit.

Possible reasons why nothing works? I installed Linotype's Font Explorer (in an attempt to get more organized), fontbook might have been updated since... who knows. Either way, I have to take a fair majority of my fonts and dump them through a program I found (which is actually pretty cool if you're into tinkering with type...http://fontforge.sourceforge.net/) and turn them into OpenType fonts.

oh dear. This is hardly promising! But whatevs. With class size hovering around 10 kids, I will at least get the chance to (hopefully) work closely with some professors! Talking with teachers was one of my favorite parts of high school, anyway.

On a related note: In Austria, the governor of a province is referred to as 'Landeshauptmann' ('mann' = 'man'). This made sense up until about 10 years ago, when the first female governor was inaugurated, and the 'man'-suffix became a little controversial, and an alternative female version was considered: Landeshauptfrau ('frau' = 'woman'). Only the lady in question, an upstanding conservative, refused to be referred to as such, insisting instead on the title of 'Frau Landeshauptmann', a description otherwise colloquially used for the wives of male governors ('cause that's how Austria works - the wife of a teacher will also be referred to as 'Mrs Teacher', the wife of someone with a Ph.D. as 'Mrs Doktor', etc.). Hilarious. A few years later, the first female social democratic governor was inaugurated, and she does not share this peculiarity - so at this point, Austria has seven Landeshauptmänner, one Frau Landeshauptmann, and one Landeshauptfrau.
