I watched Zodiac this weekend and I loved it.

I lived in Vallejo, Ca for a few years when I was a young but I didn't know a ton about the Zodiac. It was interesting to me because I had been to a lot of the places in the movie where these things happened.  Blue Rock Springs Park(where he killed his 2nd set of victims-first in the movie) is where I had my 9th birthday party, and Lake Berryessa where the 3rd couple was attacked is where my family used to go watersking on the weekends.

I also started thinking about how in 1987 when I was 8,  a letter was sent to the local newspaper by someone claiming to be the Zodiac.  The letter said he would be out on Halloween running over little kids with his car.  Turned out to be a trick by some kids but I know I wasn't allowed to trick or treat that year.

I just finished All the Colors of the Dark. Edwige Fenech looking beautiful again. She gets involved with this cult and lots of people die. It's pretty awesome.

 Cool, by the way.

I watched The Exterminator today, in which a Vietnam vet flamethrowers scuzzballs to death, drops a gangster into a meat grinder, and wastes a chickenhawk New Jersey state senator who rapes young boys. As one might expect, it has some decent footage of the grimy old 42nd Street.

I watched Footlight Parade with Grace and our mother. Much fun. The water scene blasted my brain OMG like wow

And I saw Sicko the other day. Michael Moore looks more like a psychotic Pop'n'Fresh than ever. Man I knew USA healthcare was rather fucked up but not to that extent.

I finally got Inland Empire from stupid Netflix and my damn monitor won't turn on.  I don't want to have to watch it on the laptop...  maybe I'll give it another go tomorrow.  I really really really hope anything isn't really wrong with the monitor.

Superbad had me laughing harder and more often than any other movie I can think of. This is no exaggeration; I laughed even more than when we got super stoned and watched Harold and Kumar, and this time around I was stone sober. Well worth the eight bucks. Or, rather, the 24 bucks I paid for Cetta, Scott, and myself.

Also I am positive I was the only person in the entire theater who noticed--or cared about--Clark Duke's cameo.

well it was actually pretty noticeable.  he had like a full minute of screen time over that party scene.  When I first saw him I was like 'hey cool it's clark', but then after the next six times they showed him it was pretty irritating.

Superbad was good.  The parts with Seth Rogen as the cop made the movie though.  The whole fogell storyline was far superior to the nonstop dick jokes of the seth and evan one.  ::(notwithstanding the childhood dick drawing problem)

I actually thought that the bits with the cops were for the most part filler. Funny, but not essential.

Anyway yeah, I laughed my fucking ass off. If this film is any indication, Rogen's a lot funnier than Apatow. I was bored to tears through all of 40YOV and Knocked Up, but Superbad was a goddamn riot.

Man, Radio On was the second movie I've gotten in a row that I was simply unable to finish.

Meh.

Yes, I do want to see this movie just because of its title.

Sez Matt Z-S:

Quote
"I wanted to be the funny one," laments the title character of "Hannah Takes the Stairs," "and I'm never the funny one."

That's not true. As played by the actress-writer Greta Gerwig, Hannah is neurotic, sweet and mildly sarcastic, in a Gen Y-Diane Keaton sort of way, and her small-stakes odyssey through three relationships is wryly observed.

Oy, well, yes.

Except this Hannah is blond. I have dark hair! Fuck this! Never mind! Go away!

Oh, and I liked Superbad, natch. The Treatment, Chris Eigeman and John Zorn and the cinematographer for Half Nelson notwithstanding, not very much at all.

Meh.

I've noticed that you have Double Indemnity in your queue. I hope they send that one soon!

All my top movies are on some sort of "wait" status, so I'm getting a concert of Chet Baker performing with Elvis Costello and Van Morrison. Apparently there's also a part where Elvis interviews him. I don't really remember when I put it in my queue (it must have gotten bumped when I shuffled things up), but I'm looking forward to seeing this!

Yeah, I think I'm going to move that to the top of my queue after Gorky Park.  I got in a big conversation last week with someone telling me how I just had to see this one, so I'll shuffle after that.

Call me when you're watching it. (Double Indemnity, not Gorky Park, I don't think I've seen Gorky Park, should I?) It's my favorite movie EVER!

Will do!  From what I've been told, yes, you should see Gorky Park.

Tonight (pending I am able to get enough studying done while doing laundry) will probably be The Last Temptation of Christ.

I've been on a bit of a movie kick lately, where I watched a ton of stuff and rewatched some stuff (Brazil - still my favourite Terry Gilliam movie, Total Recall - still my favourite PKD book adaption movie, The Maltese Falcon - still some of the best characterisation you will ever see, Rushmore - still only a few haircuts away from being my biography).

Most of the good stuff, unfortunately, was the stuff I was rewatching. the standout, though, was Orson Welles' Touch of Evil. It wasn't flashy, it wasn't ambitious, but it was as good a piece of filming of as well directed actors you will ever see.

I'm watching this right now. (Chet Baker: Live at Ronnie Scott's London) It's mostly concert footage with short interview clips between songs. It's a concert from 1986, so Chet Baker would've been like 56, but he looks more like a poorly preserved 80 year old. Seriously. The man did not age well. At 56, he looks almost exactly like Jack Palance looks now, except his hair is still brownish. The concert is good, and the interviews are interesting, for example, he just talked about re-learning to play trumpet after he lost all his top teeth. Now Elvis Costello is singing.

Jack Palance is dead, so that's totally not a ringing endorsement.

Are you sure you're not watching the music video for "A Touch of Gray?"

Right. Um, what I MEANT to say is that in 1986 he looked almost exactly like Jack Palance did in 2006 just before he died.
Except that Chet Baker was only 56, whereas Jack Palance was like 86 or something.

Okay, my Newfy pal recommended two films to me, The Lookout and The Prsetige, both of which I know exactly nothing at all about.

I actually like watching films when I have no idea at all who's in them, or even what genre they are, so my question is : without giving away anything at all about either film, and without knowing much about my film tastes, which one should I watch first?
