I've never wanted to see Pootie Tang, even a little bit.  But that sounds cool.  Im gonna watch it tonight!

But what comprises that story is this insane mishmash of martial arts, flashbacks, characters talking to the camera or Bob Costas, a magic belt, Pootie's mom dressed like a cow, extended dance sequences, a hit song that contains no sound, and Pootie's unique nigh-incomprehensible slang.  It's kind of like if James Joyce was assigned to write the script for a Farrelly brothers movie.

Man, don't forget to mention Dirty Dee. He has his own theme song! Every time he shows up on screen, "LOW DOWN AND DIRTY BOY YOU KNOW WHAT I'M 'BOUT"

Yeah, I kinda wanted to just post everything in the movie right there in that paragraph, but also didn't want to give anything away. 

But Dirty Dee is indeed fantastic.  Still, as villains go, I think I prefer Jennifer Coolidge as Ireenie: a femme fatale who seems to seduce men by slapping them and making strange cooing noises.

Also, I just read Roger Ebert's review of the film, and he hated it.  That didn't bother me.  What DID bother me, though, was that he referred to Biggie Shorty as a hooker.  What the F, Ebert?

She stands on a street corner and dances all day, but the movie makes clear that she's not actually a prostitute. In fact, there's a big joke about someone making that mistake. Ebert just wasn't paying attention. He does that sometimes, always his most frustrating reviews--though I'm sure he'd excuse it by saying that if it wasn't clear to him, it just wasn't clear and therefore deserves the bad review.

I love him anyway.

A friend of mine used to work in this Mac repair place, and this guy came in one day, wearing a hat that said Pootie Tang.  She was like, "Oh, Pootie Tang!  That's awesome!"  And he said, "Whoa, you LIKED that movie?"  And she said, yeah, it was fantastic.  The guy was like, "Thank you!  That's really nice to hear!  I directed it!"

Stupid Netflix sent me for today: Black Snake Moan(which I really want to see), and Alpha Dog(which I could care less about but will watch).  So, I guess I am having a Justin Timberlake movie marathon tonight.

Watched The Seventh Seal last night.  It'll never stop being an amazing movie.

So I watched Straight Time and it's an excellent 1978 Dustin Hoffman film about an ex-con, apparently the only film to explode Mr. Ebert's usually either/or Stanton-Walsh rule by including both Harry Dean Stanton and M. Emmet Walsh, and I'd offer one of my usual half-assed capsule reviewish thingies, but . . .

. . . my inner lech, which isn't really all that inner, is weeping after listening to some of director Ulu Grosbard's commentary track, since he makes a big point about how the drop-dead gorgeous 20-yr-old Theresa Russell was so uninhibited in a bunch of super-carnal, graphic sex scenes that they shot, but then decided not to include. Um, hello, isn't that what DVD bonus features are made for?!?? What are we hornball pervs supposed to do, watch that scene in Bad Timing where Art Garfunkel shags her comatose body again? That made me feel all sorts of weird when I managed to tape it off cable when I was twelve.

...if only there was some way to control what Netflix sent and in what order. That is really its biggest flaw.

Really? Netflix almost always sends me whatever's on top of my queue, unless it's on "wait" status. My big irritation is that this often backfires with particularly obscure films, when it sends a message out on, say, Tuesday: "this film will ship from Orono, Maine [not literally] on Saturday." I fucking hate when that happens--I'm like, "wait, I can burn through two more movies by then!"

I can roll with Bourne. I did find that recent NYT article about how the Robert Ludlum estate keeps churning out books with his name on them, years after his death, kind of depressing, but I guess this one was the last Bourne book actually written by him? Not that it matters.

You know, this makes me think it would be sort of awesome if once in a while Netflix just sent out some random movie for no reason, like something that's not even in your queue.  (I know if this ever happened I'd be here posting about it in the annoyed thread like I do when they send like the eighth movie in my queue instead of the first one or whatever, but still.)

i saw that new bourne movie. the action set pieces were pretty far out and i mean that the same way it was sang on flight of the conchords during the episode where they were spoofing bowie space ballads. JUST THAT WAY.

Skinwalkers was crap, but it's a really good copy.  Maybe I've just got a bias against werewolves.

When I told Hannah I planned to see Shooter, she looked at me as if I had said I planned to vote Republican or molest an incapacitated six-year-old. It's better than those things, though--a solid genre effort, and probably Antoine Fuqua's best effort to date, with a killer supporting cast backing the increasingly awesome Mark Wahlberg. For the most part it's still pretty unexceptional ("solid" not being my highest commendation), until the ending comes along and -- sort of spoiler, but not entirely, exactly -- directly advocates the assassination of corrupt politicians. That, I did not expect, and it wins the movie some bonus points.

Ten years from now, though, I doubt I'll be able to separate my memories of this from Tom Berenger's Sniper. This is the better of the two, for what it's worth.

edit:  Am I bad person for liking Training Day then?  I mean, yeah, the end is total bullshit, but come on.  Maybe I just like to see Denzel ham it up and Ethan Hawke look moody.  Is that so wrong?

I like genre movies that embrace their formulaic nature and flesh it out with little rewards. Shooter does that well--instead of hyped-up Bruckheimerisms or preview-ready one-liners, it gives you Danny Glover, Elias Koteas, thoughtful action scenes, and a sense of genuine craftsmanship. I mean, Levon Helm shows up!

Nothing against Training Day here, though. I just liked this more.

I was all excited to see Shooter after I read a blog post that explained how the story works:

All six books are essentially the same book, with a dramatic narrative that follows the traditional three act story arc:

   1. Trouble arises
   2. Swagger gets a gun
   3. Trouble is shot repeatedly.

But I stil have yet to see the film.
