I was just eating a piece of cake and watching this Jimmy Stewart movie and he was telling his wife about all the women around the country with whom he had "dancing lessons", and how he'd had so many "dancing lessons" it was a wonder he was able to "pitch" at all.
He played baseball.

I quite like Roman Polanski. I didn't know what to pick up when I went to the video store, but I saw this and figured I should. And I'm quite glad I did. It wasn't at all what I expected, but I think that made it even better. The fact that nothing much happened at all, that it was sort of a quiet meditation on tension, that the pivotal moment in the film was really such a non-thing, except in that very moment, in that boat, with those people. Yes, I quite like Roman Polanski.
I'm about to watch the second disk, which it seems is his short films. Will report back later.

Just finished
The War Game
and the question is: if I watch
Culloden
next, will it make me want to die more, or less?
Maybe I should just go see
Stardust
again.

Finally got around to watching Zodiac. It was frustrating knowing that there would be no resolution at the end of its 150min runtime, but I'm a sucker for the big plodding 70s-style crime film

I
would
be watching
Zodiac
today, but the bastards at Netflix are shipping my copy from Portland fucking Maine. I mean, seriously, what gives? This isn't some Sudanese arthouse movie from the 1950s. Meh.
Oh, and Miles, sorry for not responding to your email, again. My problem is that I meant write a substantive response rather than a "haha yeah L.A. can suck lol" thing, but as a result I kept putting it off, because procrastination owns me. I have been improving, though, for the record. Just not enough.

Watched "You're Gonna Miss Me", the Roky Erikson documentary, this weekend. I know Andrew's mentioned it before, and I pretty much agree with his assesment. It's a strange and sad portrait of the man and his family. The "postscrtipt" with Roky's brother Sumner is kind of off-putting, as he comes off as a bit wacko after having been presented as a stable, rational presence in Roky's life throughout the film. (Granted, his therapy sessions do look a little nutty.) Very good doc.

I think I've mentioned this movie before, but goddamn it's freaking sweet. Aside from being frequently sampled by The Orb, it's got an amazing Brian Eno soundtrack that sounds great in 5.1.

Whoa, I had no idea they made a movie about Culloden! I just checked out the Wikipedia entry for it, and it looks like I read the John Prebble material it was based on. Rad!
Yeah, so I'm gonna recommend that, rather than returning to The Film That Launched a Thousand Livejournals.

Oh, huh. I forgot about that. Let's give it a year, then we can measure how many LJ user icons are based on Donnie Darko, and how many are based on Stardust. We'll approach this scientifically.

Edit: Now that my miles-signal has served its purpose, I guess I'll write something about
Stardust
here:
I wish this generation's
Labyrinth
didn't express its
Chuck-and-Larry
-era sexual politics issues through
Raging Bull
.
I would like a nice cream-colored jacket like Tristan had.
When they said his name was Tristan, I thought of how many young ladies in the audience must be thinking what a cool name that is, and then I laughed kind of loudly.
Brian from
Spaced
is, as ever, totally fun to watch.

I think he was suggesting that this generation's Labyrinth (Donnie Darko?) was obviously so terrified of it's homoerotic subtext that they had to dress up a rabbital version of Joe Pesci and then shoot it in the head. Because Jake loved his brother in a way, and Donnie loved the rabbit in the same way. And no, I don't know what I'm talking about here.
