suddenly everybody's a black metal expert but wants to talk more about Watain than a new Profanatica album? whatever.

I've got the new Profanatica, but I haven't listened yet. If it's any consolation, though, I never understood the appeal of the new Watain. Though as I recall I actually really liked Casus Luciferi when it came out. I mean, honestly, I think it's a function of completely non-musical factors that Sworn To The Dark has gotten so much attention from the mainstream/indie crowd. They switched labels, they're getting more press—and it's a fact, I think, that what a lot of the folks here choose to listen to is shaped by a relatively small group of tastemakers. Not becuase whichever douchebags cover the metal beat for Stylus or PFork are such clever or knowledgeable or popular people themselves, but more because there's not a lot of exposure any other way. Most folks are not keeping their ears to the ground for new metal releases, but rather checking out the much smaller group of releases that have been filtered through their own press. So factors like advertising and the whims of the aforementioned douchebags get magnified, I think.

Not that those are invalid reasons, mind you. I wouldn't expect everyone who's interested in metal to start reading all the metal reviews and news when they don't really need more than one or two metal records a month.

Anyway, I'm listening to the Profanatica now. It's certainly a little less polished than the Watain.

speaking of metal the new Kronos is pretty fucking Shocked, on a French Decapitated/Cryptopsy kinda tip.

also black metal is hell of trendy at the moment, and the scene is saturated in shit. its hardly surprising that stuff falls through the cracks.

I always liked Havohej's versions of the songs more.  They have a cooler logo too.

The excitement over Watain is out of how good Casus Luciferi was.  Also, they were one of the few European black metal bands with a new album out to actually do a state side tour recently.  Hell, they are one of the few bigger name black metal bands that's not Nachtmystium (who tour all the fucking time) to do any sort of a tour.

So this Profanatica album came to my door last week.  So solid.  The guitar tone is choice, but my favorite aprt is this guy's voice.  He's perfect.

Just waking thread up to say that I am kinda digging Watain a lot more right now. Maybe it's because I haven't listened to Dissection in a long time so this is scratching that itch.

I guess Watain's last album could be somewhere between Dissections Storm of' and Reinkaos.  On one hand it has the melodic sense/blackness  and on the other it has that catchy groove to the songs.

Speaking of Profanatica...I bought the Church Bizarre album recently, who also are on Hells Headbangers.  Have you heard that album John.  Some fantastic riffs.

You know what, I would like to think that in 10 years wee little metalheads will be able to look back on the Dissection discography and really get down to Reinkaos.

Damn, no. And I just made a big Hells Headbangers order today (new & decent turntable = huge fucking vinyl party in my house for the last week). Will mark it down.
