diff, whenever you aren't listening to Tomokawa obsessively, you're just working up the energy to start doing so again.

Probably not. But it's the only Radiohead album I'd describe as great. OK Computer and Kid A are still good albums.

Hail to the Thief is far less great than either of those albums IMO

Its a good question - Alex asked a similar one a while ago and I said Beauty without Mercy, but I'm not certain today.
I'll put a decent compilation together over the next couple days... I'm listening to him pretty obsessively right now, so should be pretty easy and enjoyable.

Well, I've listened to that one quite a few times in the meantime (and have a legit copy of this one and Manda-La coming in the mail at the moment! yes!) and it seemed like an excellent place to start, anyway. At least for a softie like me!

And yeah, just listened to "Ojiccha" for the first time, and wow, that's another amazing song. Perhaps I should have gone for the 13 cd box after all Wink

Nonsense I've had half a dozen bitter obsessions since the last time. I'm just funneling through them real quick while I'm not getting out of the house much. But Tomokawa definitely repays obsessive behaviour!

Actually Ojiccha isn't on the box I don't think- its on Nikusei, which's drawn from for the early stuff comp disk, but i don't think it's on there for some reason.
WRT the Box, PSF told me it's sold out, but you can get the 13 disks with no box/ book etc for cheaper now, but they haven't told me how much it is... Or how much cheaper...

There's so much great stuff there in the 32 year catalogue... he's one of those rare people who can sustain great work throughout, partially because it's so singular. I really want to learn Japanese so I can (a) know what je and Kan Mikami are singing about, and (b) go to Japan and hunt for records by him in thrift shops...

Insect Warfare - World Extermination LP
Cola Freaks - S/T 7"

And I couldn't find pictures of...

Regulations - Different Needs 7"
Distroy - S/T 7"
Smash 'n' Grab - S/T 7"
Insurgents - Dead Hicks tape

The Insect Warfare, holy shit, what an absolute burner of a record. Can't wait to see this band when they come out here in February. The Cola Freaks 7" is great, more of that current Scandi wave of snotty garage punk that totally rules. Regulations new 7" is exactly what I expected, but if it ain't broke. Insurgents are four 15-19 year olds from my city playing obnoxious, raging DC-style hardcore and they make me very hopeful for the future.

Board reputation has it that the first will be good enough to outweigh the almost certain lousiness of the latter two, which I bought for reasons I cannot quite justify.

difficult & alex: you guys ever frequent this site? Dirk, the guy who ran it, sadly passed away, but he ran an amazing site. Lots of Mikami & Tomohawa related material, and general info even if links might be down..

Yup, that was a good one. There's a few others around that bring the crazy Japanese-ness nearly as well though.
The whole 70s Japan thing is suddenly in demand right now, possibly thanks to Julian Cope. I'm a little wary of Japrocksampler though - some very divergent perspectives I can see there, and some dodgy info by the sound of it, but I'll need to get it for the Rallizes chapter probably.
Now if Alan Cummings wrote a book....

Yeah, I figured, I just meant that I might have gotten myself 13 discs instead of two after all...

Except for the part where I can afford two, but not 13 discs, of course.

Anyway, yeah, I was aware of that blog, although I didn't read it regularly. And it's quite somber to look at it now.

I was gonna say, hell, I'd settle for a Primer. Then it occurred to me that he may have written one already and I just missed it, and it turns out he did. And the issue is out of print. And the article not online. Bah.

Yeah. mutter mutter.
I do take a vicarious pleasure on going through the website entries on Japrocksampler and finding all the posts where Cummins is correcting Cope on really basic stuff too.
Related: an amazing clip from a Japanese 70s movie with a young Kan Mikami screaming Odo in a fairly interesting context. He has hair! and its a great song too - translation in the clip info

Records:

I actually have that Bootsy album on cd but I couldn't resist getting the vinyl too when I saw his big smilin' face riding in the mist on that huge bike with a space bass on his lap.

yeah, me too. denty one (the guy behind minikon) does all of his own graphic design/album covers, etc.

go here: www.minikon.com

and click on the blue "carbonmade" tab on the right side of the screen. that'll take you to his portfolio...some absolutely incredible art to be found there: paintings, graphic design, photography, you name it.

very talented dude.
