I think what we need is some sort of unisex clothing that could turn into a vending machine disguise. Then everyone would be safe.

Bicyclists will never be safe and tolerated by car drivers until they follow the rules of the road en masse. I'm always extra courteous and aware when cyclists are around, but literally every time I drive I see them blasting through stop signs, red lights, going the wrong way down one-way streets, slaloming in and out of traffic, driving between two lanes of cars (especially approaching stoplights, and then blasting right through the red light). My friend, on foot, got hit by a cyclist the other day when he was crossing at a crosswalk at a red light and the cyclist blew through the red light.

I almost pancaked a cyclist yetserday when he blew through a four-way stop sign just as I was driving through the intersection, having already stopped. He actually apologized immediately, and I didn't hold it against him - but damn it, cyclists, it's YOUR OWN safety at stake here! Follow the rules!

A friend of mine recently wrecked her car into another parked car while trying to avoid a cyclist who shot out of an alley and crossed the street at full speed. She clipped his back tire anyway. Dude ended up in the hospital, and she ended up getting cited for failure to control. Her insurance rates also went up. We're a very cyclist friendly city, but this kind of stuff happens all too often.

There need to be more bike paths. A lot more. I don't ride my bike on the road anymore because I'm afraid of dying.

Clearly I should be devoting my time to the manly pursuits of watching HGTV, drinking Diet Coke.

Why you're wrong, pollo, is that you've got a woman talking about her experience with latent sexism and your first instinct is to write her off as "uppity" or oversensitive, or what-have-you.

Pointing out casual sexism isn't the same as calling this guy an asshole.  The sooner people can stop getting defensive or pulling out excuses whenever anybody brings up one of the ten zillion bits of latent sexism floating out there, the sooner we can move toward real gender equality.

* Maggie raises fist, then reveals Zippo and demi-cup. Flames ensue.

And teh Blucas shall lead them.

Seriously Blucas you are awesome and most men my own age and older aren't half as righteous.

i gotta say that i would expect people to say that sort of thing to women more often because women get attacked more often.

I mean, yeah. Women are generally physically weaker than men and so might reasonably be thought of as more vunerable to muggers, right? It's not an entirely baseless and silly thought.

Which isn't to say it doesn't irk or that guys don't get mugged or women can't defend themselves or whatever else. Still.

There's a difference between 'casual' and 'unintentional' is what I am saying. I just think she overreacted to what was at heart something completely innocuous.

Also KJ right on though apparently common sense has no bearing up ins

Dude, you saw the part about how she reacted by saying "you too", right?

Strikes me as quite the overreaction, indeed.

I wash my hands of this thread. Good luck with the well-meaning store clerk!

Can this thread now be about solving small but important problems?

Why not?

I solved the problem of whether to get a mild-and-creamy cheese or a strong-smelling cheese last night.  I solved it by buying something called "Cambozola", which combines the creaminess of camembert with the stank of gorgonzola.  I solved it by eating it.  I solved it by eating it with my mouth.

The thing is that mugging, as an institution, is just riddled with prejudice.
