Mugabe critic quits as archbishop
Quote
A prominent critic of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned as the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bulawayo, after an adultery scandal.
Zimbabwe's state media in July published photographs of what it said was Pius Ncube in bed with a married woman who worked for his parish.
The footage of who appears to be Pius Ncube leaping into bed with some woman was one of the more convenient scoops for the Zimbabwean state-run media. The timeline of events is instructive:
Quote
December 1946: Born
1980s: Witnesses massacres in south-western Zimbabwe but prevented from speaking out
October 1997: Appointed Archbishop of Bulawayo
March 2007: Calls for mass protests to oust Mugabe
2 July 2007: Says foreign powers should remove Mugabe
10 July 2007: Calls Mugabe a "megalomaniac"
17 July 2007: Sued for adultery
11 September 2007: Resigns as archbishop

You guys should hear him speak. Perfect Oxford accent. The way he ties his cultured image to his populism towards Zimbabwe's rural African poor is pretty impressive. Being the Zimbabwean president has also proved to be fantastically good for his pocketbook.

They also just tested the world's most powerful non-nuclear weapon. Between their lack of fucking, their dissolution of government, and their explosion of gigantic bombs, I think it's safe to say that we Americans can go back to talking about those "no-good Russkies" once more.
Sorry, Fundamentalist Islam! You had your chance, but now we've remembered where our hearts truly lie!

dissolving the government is not the horrible drastic thing it sounds like it would be when we're talking about most parliamentary countries. it's relatively common in a lot of them when government or congress is at some kind of deadlock.
that's all i can say, though; i am not nearly qualified to give any opinion on this particular state of affairs.

Coldforge is right. In Russia dissolving the government is a regular power of the President, a nice little residual power from decades of one-party government. Hell, we've got it in Australia, and it's technically the Queen who can do it. God save our Queen. Putin is a crazy KGB bastard though, what with his cute little journalist killin's, and dictatorial leanings, and corruption. But he's only testing the missile because of the neocon's swell new missile 'defence' system.

Which is really just a plan to further line the pockets of the ruling parties in both the U.S. and Russia. That's the one thing they didn't count on when communism fell apart... the profitability of a cold war.

True. It also gives US first-strike capability against Russia. But the neocons are most concerned about all the gas and oil (what- oil again?) in the region, mostly located in the 'stans. Russia, China and all those Central Asian ex-USSR countries formed the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (tautology?) a few years ago, which means that the oil and gas is going east instead of west. Which is, of course, unacceptable.

I've been pretty out of the loop regarding Washington stuff because I've just been pretending this administration doesn't actually exist. But Condoleezza Rice is the one who's advocating a diplomatic solution with Iran? Scary.
