Apparently, it is now illegal to
make false claims of having won the Medal of Honor
. The dude in question sounds like a first-rate douchebag, but still, what fucking bullshit.
Also, a little late, but why do the Democrats even bother asking Mukasey tough questions? We all know they're just going to rubber-stamp him anyway; I swear, they're so fucking spineless and pathetic that they'd retain more dignity just asking, "Do you promise to be a good boy" than they are by letting him acknowledge that he'll continue to condone torture and then approving him anyway.

I hate the Democrats more than the Republicans these days. I understand the practical short-term arguments for supporting the Dems, but it all disappears into nothingness of you look more than 3 years down the road. There is no reason to have anything but contempt for 95% of Democrats. I'm seriously going to write some anti-Democratic letters to the editor for our local paper. They've published a couple really long letters I've written in the past, so I'm pretty sure I can get some more stuff published.

Guys. California.
My 86-yr-old grandma is in her house BY HERSELF. Her nurse/housekeeper lives in Escondido and was called home because she is being evacuated. Oddly, Grandma is chill about it, but I am not. I hope all you Californians are okay. Get outta there!

I wouldn't feel bad if it was just the multi-million dollar homes in Malibu getting destroyed, but yeah, shit is fucked up

That was pretty much my exact response. Hope your grandma is okay, Maggie! I'm feeling pretty safe in Silver Lake, so things should be okay here.

There is already all kinds of terrible evacuation into Thunderdomes and now hurricane force winds make any movement of people that much more hazardous. Meanwhile, my grandma may have to go to a shelter, which scares her, but might be a sociologically good thing-- she hasn't been poor since the 40s, and is in for a shocker if she goes to said shelter. BUT. She is old and weak and anxious and what scares me most is that she and her dotty friend Dottie are trying to manage this on their own. Admirably foolish, but foolish nonetheless.
These fires are inland a bit. Small farming community and where poorer people live and a whole Indian reservation evacuated.
So no, CNN, it is not those same shots of million-dollar homes, looping over and over.
Animal sheltering is being dealt with fairly well, but things may get overcrowded-- like 6 emergency animal shelters are already full in SD county.

This is more an editorial than news, but I will never cease to be infuriated by
tough-love camps
that abuse teens.
She has a shitload of other articles on the subject, just google her name.
This
is probably the most informative and most infuriating. Every time I read one of these things, I get worked up all over again.

GRANDMAWATCH 2007 UPDATE: She slept at home, is doing fine. Because of where she is geographically (and how close to a famous world-class spa), she should be fine. Thanks for your concern, guys.
I have another friend in the OC who is away right now. I hope his house and all his records are okay.
Whit, are you wearing masks when you go outside? Is your lady being run extra-ragged? LOVE TO CALI.

I admit I made a not-funny joke this morning asking after Pepperdine's giant cross, but, man, be safe, Grandma Go and Whit and Bernard and crystal and The_Tourist and everyone. Yikes and yikes.

No, but I damn well should be. I'm in Orange County now (northern OC, but still), and the breathin' ain't easy. This is not doing wonders for my cough, either. On the upshot, the 5 south was
empty
this morning--I think I set a land speed record.
Also, yeah, WTF Florida, but we already knew that. I don't think I mentioned it here, but driving home from Miami to L.A. this past summer took me a bit into the FL/GA fires, and THAT breathing was baaaaaaaaad. Oh man, I thought I was going to die. This isn't nearly as bad here, but I'd hate to be further south right now. Or further north, for that matter. We're sort of boxed in by fires right now.

Yeah, there's a thread about it in earbuds.
Hey, speaking of news though, I was reading last week about how they used your school for nuclear testing back in the day and are just now cleaning it up. WTF?
