Okay,so in my excitement of the idea that Mr. Corwood Industries was playing one of the top 10 coolest clubs in the world, I put "Jandek plays Paradiso" as a subject head. That, I now realize, was not looking at the long term. Since the old "Jandek" topic has been swallowed up (it was a bit out of control) I thought I'd announce today's news with a more long-term subject header.

Now then: big news.

Jandek is playing San Francisco on January 12, 2008. Where? Don't know yet. Tickets? Don't know that either, but info should be up fast (it just posted to the Jandek list this morning).

Since I think more people on this list are from San Francisco than Amsterdam, this seems like a big opportunity. I'll put info up as soon as I know more. I may try to be at this one, though it falls on a bad weekend for college teachers (right before school starts back up). Ah well, somebody will enjoy it. This is is first venuture into Cali, so make him feel at home. Maybe an LA or San Diego show can follow? For now, this seems like the most appropriate city in the States for Jandek to play.

Dudes, Du Nord is teeny tiny. If y'all want to go, I would get on it soooo fast.

edit because they now have a space upstairs, and tix go on sale next week. Man I want to go, but it goes against my entire relationship to Jandek for him to materialize.

You should go. Listen: "he" doesn't materialize. Jandek truly isn't a person, it's an event. You know no more about "Corwood Industries," or any said person said to be behind such a money losing endeavor after seeing the show than before. With a whole bunch of shows under my belt (and I've been following since 1993) I can say that it's only deepened the mystery. It was EASIER to categorize when it was some wild Texan dropping vinyl (and discs) whenever. You could put the M.O. together. But the live shows have re-vitalized him, and they're as powerful as any live act in the states today. So forget about the guy on the album covers. You'll see someone on stage that looks like that, but the mystery stays the same. I really can't imagine that you'd be disappointed - yes, the "man behind Corwood" is a human being, but pay no attention to that man in front of the curtain (to turn a phrase). "Jandek" is what forms out of the music. It may be pleasant, jarring, funny, depressing, occasionally long winded or utterly gorgeous, but it will only open a new chapter on the saga. But that's my advice. This is going to be  HUGE show. I wish I KNEW that I could go - I'd buy the tickets! I may yet. Sigh.

Hey Danen, when's the next installment of Niagra Blues gonna drop?

Well here's the thing, Maaik my friend. The next installment was finished and sent off last March. In April I was told to expect it (and a revised first part) to drop in June. Then nothing. Then more nothing. And then, finally, I was told that the imprint is dissolving. So, like so many independent writers and musicians before me, I find myself with a completed work (the whole of the thing was my thesis last May - it's all ready to go) and nowhere to put it. Now that I've gotten resettled in Colorado I perhaps can shop it around and get it all out at once. But it's gonna take some time.

And no hard feelings to Single Cell Press, either. I don't think anybody made a dime off the book - they put a lot of energy, time and international shipping costs into nearly selling out the first (and so far only) edition. Great group of guys and I feel priviledged to have worked with them. But there WILL be more! And I think it's a good deal better than the first installment. Oh yeah, you heard a bit of that in Atlanta, didn't you? But that was real rough. Final copy that passed defense was pretty smooth - better be after a couple of hundred re-writes!

Thanks for the interest. I'll certainly let you know when I've found a new press.

don't be dick.  go to the show.

You know what's great, Diesel Powered? I was gonna post on this last night, but I forgot. Then I saw this sitting there and thought, "hey, I betcha somebody linked the NPR piece." And so it was. This is an AWESOME piece - honest, to the point, and filled with genuine appreciation and curiosity. Plus, on the site, you've got to look at the whole letter. I love how he asks for a copy of the story after so nicely refusing (as always) an interview. He sticks to his guns but he's still happy about the coverage. He's a great example that, if patient, a good artist can succeed without succumbing to the system. Janky's never been about topping the modern rock charts, or whatever. Hell, he was putting music out before there WAS a modern rock chart. He deserves this spotlight.

This is just another reminder that I need to pick up his records. (Hey, you try and prioritize the thousands of records on your "to buy" list.) I have half a mind to send him $24 and a note that says to send me three records of his choosing. I mean... from what I've heard, I'm thinking they're all interesting in their own way and I really can't imagine hating any of them.

Yeah I understand that! Here's three to buy, though you'll need to send an extra $4 for Glasgow Monday (WORTH IT!)

1. Chair Beside a Window (great acoustic, and with "Nancy Sings.")
2. Blue Corpse (good starter album - excellent folk-based "she left me" album)
3. Glasgow Monday (that's the one the piano piece in the NPR story is from)

There are many others, and if you want a good "Jandek punk" album, get either Newcastle Sunday (at $12) or just go for it and snag Brooklyn Wednesday (4 cds for $20). I swear you can't go wrong with that lineup.

I ran into Mike--the guy who brought the Corwood Rep down to Atlanta and organized the show at the Academy of Medicine--at band practice last night.  I reintroduced myself and he told me that he's organizing a couple Jandek shows for '08, one in Florida and one in North Carolina.

I may have to make a trip out of state for at least one of those.

No idea.  If I run into him again, I'll press him for more info.

Unless Danen has his email address or something, which I suspect he does.  HEY DANEN, how do I get in touch with this guy who lives in the same city as me?

That was my question (what was the piano piece in the NPR story?) and I didn't even have to ask! Thanks, Danen!

Well, I've never heard a full song by him, but I just ordered Chair Beside a Window and Glasgow Monday, as well as the Jandek documentary(and the Devil and Daniel Johnston.) This should keep me busy for a while...

I dont get Jandek.

I kind of feel like
a big ol douche
for not getting it
cause I've heard
from friends that
he's this amazing
brilliant artists.

But I just dont
like listening to it
or understand why
anyone else would.

But people obviously
like his music.

Does it have to
do with mystery?

I don't really like Jandek either, but auto-da-fey posted this paragraph about director Jess Franco a while back, and I found it really interesting, so maybe that can explain how people approach him.

God, how I wish he'd just stop.
The line breaks are unnecessary
and random to boot. It gets on
my fucking nerves.
