I've realised that I don't have the toddler-free time to make the old-school "sitting by the stereo" mixtape (without his input), so probably ought to change my participation to make CD/receive either. I've been having an interesting time thinking about what to put on it though. I guess I could still put it on a tape from my laptop, but it's not quite in the spirit of the thing is it?

I know people who make pretty kick-ass mixtapes that way. I thought about doing it, but I kind of share your concerns: if I was going to make a tape, I think I'd squat down on the floor in front of the stereo, surrounded by a stack of CDs, and do it the old-fashioned way. But it's up to you to decide, really.

Please help me parse this one. Are you offering to make someone a tape or CD in exchange for getting a CD, or are you saying that you want a CD/tape in exchange for a CD of your own making? I put you down for the former, because that is the grammatical structure that is favored by the list above, but the latter seems a bit more likely to me in terms of equipment you might have at hand (i.e. if you have the means to make a tape, you must have a way to play one, too; the reverse isn't necessarily the case), so I'm confused.

I have the means to make and listen to tapes, however I will be much more likely to listen to a cd as my truck has a cd player and otherwise I mostly listen to the ole pod.

I have a little stereo out in my garage with a 3-disc CD turntable and a dual tape deck.  I suppose I could put together a mix tape from some of my garage CDs--mostly stuff I listened to 15-25 years ago.  If someone would be interested in that kind of thing.  And if I can figure out where to buy a blank cassette tape these days.

(I guess having an even number might help - if not, I guess a solution might be to do it chain-like - i.e. person A makes something for person B who makes something for person C, etc. - might be better than one-on-one exchange? Either that or someone feels inspired to make two mixes.)

edit: clare, I now changed your status to "make CD" rather than make either, because your last word a few days ago was that you were probably going to do a CD, so I didn't want you to get stuck with a tape-only partner (by which I really mean: with davy, because he's the only one who definitely wants a tape). So apparently I shoulda cleaned the tape heads in my boombox before attempting this because now I got a mix of slightly warblier versions of the songs I picked out. Now I gotta find more blank tapes and try to do some dental work on this deck.

Making a mix tape using only my vinyl collection will be my next project! It's gotta be one or the other with my equipment--it's hard to mix source formats because you can really tell the difference between them on the finished tape.

If I did have a tape deck for my main stereo, I'd be far more enthusiastic about the prospect of making a tape; but since my tape deck is part of a different set-up then the CD player, it'd just be a drag. (Then again, my record player sounds pretty terrible anyway and I would have gotten it looked into a long time ago already if that didn't involve carrying it into a different CD, so actually, the results wouldn't sound too great anyway.)

alex, that change for my status is fine! thanks. I wish I had more time to do it the old-school way. I keep thinking of things that I want to put on that aren't in my iTunes, but are in my CD or vinyl collection. Before E was born I had started to digitise some of my vinyl on the grounds that I had plenty of spare time and not a lot of spare money/inclination to buy them all again. I didn't get as far as I would have liked, so now it's a project that will be stalled for the next few years.

I did check and re-draw in cases of incompatibility between mediums, and the following should work for everyone (the only one I wasn't sure about upon sifting through the entire thread was ellaguru-Bernard, since Arlo is listed under "make tape or CD" but has made comments suggesting he might in fact be in the process of making a tape, when Bernard specified "get CD"), but in any case, let me know if any of these are problematic and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out:
