Get people to do productive things that require capital investment and have risk?  Does that make sense to you?  If you don't allow an individual to profit off of putting their assets at risk I don't understand why anyone would put their assets at risk for any reason.

It's basically the Protestant Ethic, but with $$$ instead of God.

I think technological innovation is, if not a panacea, a way of dealing with a vast spectrum of the problems of both micro and macro scale humanity.  I think if you don't create real monetary rewards for that innovation, people have no incentive to do so as individuals, and as a collective are generally bad and/or ponderous at it.  So I don't understand why all rich people are lumped together and derided.

I guess when you guys bring up class war or the vagaries of the bourgeois over and over again in a number of threads it goes from being something cute that you do, like a little kid picking his nose, to something that makes me embarrassed for you, like a little kid shitting his pants.  I'd rather talk about TV, but me saying "I like Gossip Girl" brought people out of the woodwork with pitchforks and effigies.

Absolutely not.  You have no way of knowing that and neither do I.  What I will say is that vast personal fortunes of some of the richest people in the world have been expended entirely on philanthropy and that government revenues are generally redistributed in such a way that the richer people get fewer services per tax dollar.  Charitable giving in the United States was $300 B out of a 13.3 B GDP in 2006.  In 2005, those who made over $1 million per year (.2% of the population) accounted for 20 % of all charitable giving targeted at fulfilling the basic needs of the poor (~50B).  Those who made between 200,000 and 1 million (2.1% of the population) accounted for 40% of all charitable giving targeted at fulfilling the basic needs of the poor(100B).
