Maybe it gets way DEEP from there.
It does! There is a father with A Cocaine Problem in one of the next episodes! And we will all learn that drugs are bad.
Oh noes! They might have to send him to one of those $2000/day clinics
I am throwing up noooo, etc.

You are the best at lumping people into categories! Better than Reese's hatred of fratboys! Oh wait I forgot Marinus.

There will be time for sorting the good out from the bad after we have redistributed all of their assets

Yeah then everyone can be a literature professor like you and we can figure out a way to ____ because I seriously don't know how literature professors help people at the macro scale.
No offense! I'm sure they enrich many people's lives! I just don't understand how you can incentive an innovation imperative beyond a monetary method.

Get people to do productive things that require capital investment and have risk? Does that make sense to you? If you don't allow an individual to profit off of putting their assets at risk I don't understand why anyone would put their assets at risk for any reason.

It means Dave thinks that money is the only way civilization gets better.
It's basically the Protestant Ethic, but with $$$ instead of God.

I think technological innovation is, if not a panacea, a way of dealing with a vast spectrum of the problems of both micro and macro scale humanity. I think if you don't create real monetary rewards for that innovation, people have no incentive to do so as individuals, and as a collective are generally bad and/or ponderous at it. So I don't understand why all rich people are lumped together and derided.
I guess when you guys bring up class war or the vagaries of the bourgeois over and over again in a number of threads it goes from being something cute that you do, like a little kid picking his nose, to something that makes me embarrassed for you, like a little kid shitting his pants. I'd rather talk about TV, but me saying "I like Gossip Girl" brought people out of the woodwork with pitchforks and effigies.

dude, that totally makes sense, it was purely your wording that lost me.
as i said before, rich people who are doing shit with their money to make the world a better place are cool by me. they're also in the minority, where rich people are concerned. you'll admit that, right?

argument
for quite a while now, and the rich are still rich and the poor are still poor, G. When exactly can I expect technology to fix everything?

Absolutely not. You have no way of knowing that and neither do I. What I will say is that vast personal fortunes of some of the richest people in the world have been expended entirely on philanthropy and that government revenues are generally redistributed in such a way that the richer people get fewer services per tax dollar. Charitable giving in the United States was $300 B out of a 13.3 B GDP in 2006. In 2005, those who made over $1 million per year (.2% of the population) accounted for 20 % of all charitable giving targeted at fulfilling the basic needs of the poor (~50B). Those who made between 200,000 and 1 million (2.1% of the population) accounted for 40% of all charitable giving targeted at fulfilling the basic needs of the poor(100B).

There's a 17 year difference in average lifespan between Wilde's time and now. Personal conveyance is generally affordable whether it's a bicycle, a bus, or a car. Transistor radio, television, etc.
