Re: The Wire

I'm pretty sure I know how Omar's gonna go. Count on Michael getting him about 3/4 of the way through next season.

Yeah, this seems about right to me. I mean, I love Omar, but ain't no way he's gettin' through the entire run without getting got. Unless he quits the street life and marries Fran Boyd.

Well they were originally going to kill him halfway through season 1 but then he got the Spike treatment, but yeah I think you're right.

lcc you can't hate on Buffy one minute and make Buffy references the next.  Weak!

I think it only makes my point stronger that I have that context without the content.

Contextually I would assume that it means a minor character is made a main character due to realizations in the writer's room that the actor is really good/the character adds something AWESOME.  I would imagine the term descends from the character Spike, on Buffy.

Yeah, they brought in Spike for like, a 5 or 6 episode stint after which he was supposed to die, but he ended up on the show for, you know, 4 more seasons (plus a season on Angel).  It's also kind of supposed to be a cautionary tale, because concocting ways to keep a badass fan-favorite character around can lead to woobification.  (ie, they gave Spike a soul, made him fall in love with Buffy, etc etc).

You see the same thing a little bit with Omar, what with the Being Touched By Bunk, the blind uncle, the Robin-Hood stuff, the gay bar, etc etc.

I would much much much rather see Omar get got than turn into the Bad Guy With a Heart of Gold.

But the difference between woobifying someone on The Wire and woobifying someone on any other show anywhere is huge. I don't think they have been Heart Of Golding him, I think they have been humanizing him.

then again I ain't seen Season 4 yet so I might be missing something.

No, it's not Spike-level yet, what I'm saying is that the writers should learn from that mistake before it's too late.

All the episodes of Season 5 are done right?  I know they've wrapped shooting.

Hey, maybe that writer's strike will move it up!

If he doesn't walk away after the big score at the end of season 4, then yeah, he's gonna get got. Or he should.

Well, there was that spoiler/teaser by Simon where he said one of the characters gets an uncharacteristically ultra-happy ending, but I'm guessing that's going to be Bubs, given how low they left him at the end of Season 4.

Honestly I was ready for (and fully expecting) Omar to get clipped during se. 4. The best thing to do at this point would be to just completely leave him out of se. 5, but somehow I don't see that happening.

He's totally going to walk away from the game AND still get got.

edit:  I don't know why I whited that out; just my speculation.

If he stays in Baltimore he is. Actually I'm beginning to think you're right either way. You think the Greeks will get him? He's pretty good at staying in the wind but I think if anyone can get him, they can. Or maybe one of Chris and Snoop's squad.

I'm really not clear how much to spoiler here.

Oh, man, if I have one wish for Season 5, it's to see the fucking Greeks get it.  Another way I could see it going is 1)  Omar leaves the game, 2)  Someone kills his boytoy; he comes back on a revenge/suicide mission

I'm most interested in what happens with Randy. And yeah, the Greeks.
