could have used a bit more candor in exploring his sex life
Is there a movie you don't think suffers from this problem to some extent, Whit?

not to interrupt all the sex talk, but after spending 18 months or so patiently awaiting a UK release (i'm right in thinking it came out 01/01/06 in russia, right?), i just found out that Day Watch opened in cinemas here on October 5th, less than two weeks ago, and is ALREADY done with and forgotten for every cinema i can find on the mainland with the honourable exception of
one
in guildford, which happens to be a mere 250ish miles away from my place of residence. what a shitty fucking run.

Wasn't he already dead when the documentary was made?
Yeah, I meant his perceptions and feelings as recalled by his friends--a very mediated window, admittedly, but the best one could hope for.
And re:

: dude, I bet McNamara got
down
. Those fricking Kennedy parties were wild shit.

So,
Girl 27
is a documentary about Patricia Douglas who was raped at a party hosted by MGM in 1937, filed suit, made a few headlines, and then disappeared. The writer who discovered her story was working on a story about Jean Harlow. When he was doing the research, he stumbled on old newspaper coverage of Patricia Douglas' story and decided to find out why no one knows about her. (There was a Vanity Fair article about this a few years ago.) He found a lot of evidence that MGM's influence kept her from having her day in court, and he got a lot of interview footage with Patricia Douglas. She was really brave. It's sad that this event ruined her life, but I guess at least her story finally got told.

watched recently:
Surf's Up: i really liked this one. easily my favorite non-Pixar cgi movie yet. its funny, its not overly heavy handed with its message, and the animation is really good. if youre in the market for watching a cute kids movie you could do way way worse.
Planet Terror: just as good as when i saw it in the theater. this movie fucking rules. SEE IT AND REJOICE.

I gotta fifth the excitement about the t.A.T.u. movie.
Diesel, have you seen
Twin Falls Idaho
? It's from the same brothers who made
Northfork
, and I like it a lot--but then, I also like
Northfork
a lot, so ymmv and all.
Also, as much as I also love
Planet Terror
, I just can't get behind this after-the-fact pretense that
Grindhouse
wasn't really a "feature film" but an "event" or whatever the exact justification was for breaking it apart.

yea, that was pretty retarded but whatever. at least this way i dont have to pay for Quentin Tarantino Presents: Annoying Chicks Talking For Seven Thousand Years (Muscle Car Edition). the thing im more pissed at is the lack of the trailers on either dvd. planet terror has the Machete one but where is THANKSGIVING DAMMIT?
i guess theyre saving that for the inevitable stupid boxset edition that has both movies in it :P

it's funny y'all mention
grindhouse
. 'cause i watched
death proof
last night. i liked it. it was a bit too much tarantino for me, though. the dialogue actually felt to me like a bad parody of a tarantino flick. and what was with the stupid references to his other films? "that's a tasty drink," talk about foot massages, etc. i don't know, it was enjoyable, and not really worth thinking about too much. can't wait to watch
planet terror
.

I liked
Northfork
so much that I bought it.
I mean, I own about 200 DVDs, so it's not a huge deal for me to buy one, but still. I liked it a lot.

Given my distaste for Death Proof, I'm kinda happy that they broke it down into two DVDs. I may end up buying Planet Terror, as it was one of the best movies I've seen in 2007. Maybe the very best one I saw in a theatre.

yesterday i watched THE TERROR starring, somehow, jack nicholson and boris karloff. i guess it came out right as color film was starting and they didn't really know how to handle it so everything is really oversaturated and strange-looking. also apparently it was made in like four days using leftover actors, sets and resources from a better movie the director had just finished. it was all right!

Me too, in two formats! I really love
The Terror
--washed-out colors included (I'd hate to see it restored, honestly). Roger Corman means a lot to me; I discovered his work at a young age, and movies like that,
Creature from the Haunted Sea
,
The Wasp Woman
,
Ski Troop Attack
, etc. were really pivotal in shaping my cinematic aesthetic, which tends toward the cheap and sleazy. Later I'd move on to Troma, then abandon the corny stuff altogether for grittier grindhouse fare, but I still remember idolizing Corman after reading his autobiography back in the day.
By coincidence, I just watched a Corman movie myself. His old scriptwriter Charles Griffith just died (The LA Weekly let Corman write a
nice little obituary
), so I popped on
A Bucket of Blood
in tribute. I've seen this numerous times, so I didn't really pay full attention, watching it as I made breakfast, did some dishes, and folded laundry, but it's still a lot of fun--sharply written and shot, with hilarious beatnik poetry and a great lead performance by the inimitable Dick Miller.

ADF, I have questions: What is it that appeals to you about cheap sleaze, why does it appeal to you, and what elements of your life does that taste stem from?
