Just watched and, while I'm not familiar with the exact historical details pertaining to this topic (adf to thread?), I think I can safely say this is a fairly early example of a movie in which the protagonist plays a piano with his penis.

this is my favorite seijun suzuki movie! it was completely hilarious and great! so much better than branded to kill!

O Lucky Man! is out on dvd now.

oh man what in the damn! big news!

You did notice the part about how if you're renting it, you need both discs, right? Each of them has about 1/2 of the movie.

'ppreciate the warning but i needn't play around with renting. picked it up immediately on amazon for fifteen bucks (!). i wonder why they did that though? the vhs was set up like that, but three hours on a dvd isn't unprecedented

also new: mario bava volume 2! including "five dolls for an august moon" which has a sweet piero umiliani score with which i'm familiar!

It's annoying precisely because there is no reason to split the film. . . I'm watching the bonus feature on the second disc, which is a feature about Malcolm McDowell called O Lucky Malcolm!. It's excellent.

edit: Parts of it are a recording of him speaking to an audience. He's telling a story about Caligula where he does an impression of Sir John Gielgud and refers to him as Johnny G.

the day i first saw the insider was the day i first saw russell crow. i thought he was a sensitive and passionately intense actor (little did i know he would later beat up front desk people and that he had a band with the word grunt in the title) and watching it again, i was surprised by how much i like it. i like the al pacino role though he (as always) overacted to a psychotic degree, but after he took over the third stretch of the movie, the character of the 'insider' sort of faded out, and there were just these brief scenes of him dealing with his wife's divorce, but no more complex character type stuff. it's hard to relate to the big-tobacco-cover up because nowadays it's common knowledge that cigarette companies reinforce their cigarettes with chemicals that cause them to be like crack; i suppose the triumph of the truth felt a little understated for that reason. i think if the movie would have stayed with crow and cut a little of pacino's character, the impact would've been greater. pacino's character, the 60 minutes producer, never really had anything to lose, even when he leaked to the nyt when cbs wouldn't run the episode with crow detailing how big tobacco had perjured themselves in court about cigarettes.

as a former smoker, sometimes smoker (tonight!!) i've become very familiar with the quitting process. i smoke some weekends, if i'm around other smokers, or around alcohol, and it's very difficult to quit, especially the first day after smoking again.

i'd like to see a movie about how the cigarette cessation industry has made billions selling a cure that doesn't work.   tobacco gum. tobacco lozenges. tobacco patches. doctor recommended.

i'm pretty glad criterion didn't end up doing o lucky man like they did if..., because if it cost $40+ i would have a lot of trouble justifying purchasing it, especially with my .avi rip of the vhs

i bought these today

UN FLIC the final jean pierre melville picture, alain delon and all
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH the original with peter lorre
LUCKY JIM vhs, never heard of it but it looks like a romp
NOTHING SACRED vhs, also never heard of it but sounds good
and then this EIGHT HORROR CLASSICS FOR A FEW BUCKS thing with the wasp woman, the indestructible man, dementia 13, the devil's hand, i bury the living, horror hotel, a bucket of blood, and the ape

the following i swiped from work when i learned we were getting rid of our vhs collection:
LOCAL HERO charming little dude of a movie
THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL early bunuel, quite good

Exterminating Angel wasn't that early for LB, was it? But still very good, most definitely.

I know those public-domain horror comps are all over the place, but that one has the EXACT line-up of my 2-DVD Platinum comp. Is that the one you have? Because if so, check it out: they're based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, city of my birth! That brings me great delight. I have no idea why they're there or who they are, but hey, at least La Crosse is giving the world more than the largest six pack of beer in the known universe.

Also, The Ape from that collection is pretty feeble. I dig the others, to varying extents.

and yeah, it is that platinum thing! $6.95. i figure if as little as one of the eight is good it'll be worth it

Today I saw Nightmare Before Xmas in 3-D. It made me a little dizzy-like, but it also teleported me just enough back to seeing it when I was eight -- the fourth grade -- for my best friend Zack's birthday, and because third and fourth grades were probably the best years of my life, I'm not complaining.

Debating whether to see Lake of Fire. Still haven't seen anything I'd planned to -- e.g., Michael Clayton, Gone Baby Gone, Darjeeling Limited -- and now Once and 3:10 are both at the $3 theater. What to do, what to do.

Just finished The Spook Who Sat By the Door. Mostly I'm echoing the sentiment upthread of "how the fuck did this film ever get made?" I thought it was pretty great, all in all, and I'm not really sure what to say about it other than what's said ('cept thanking Whit for recommending it). I think I'll have to check out the book.

 Cool

I'm really glad you liked it, Jeb, and definitely report back if you read the book. BAoH mentioned it being out of print--I don't know if that means it's just hard to assign a class because there aren't tons of copies out there, or if it means there are no copies out there and it's hard to come by.

Cheapest I found on Amazon was 15 buck. Have to think about that. Maybe Brad could loan me his copy?

Unfortunately I don't have one. Sad  I still haven't even read it myself, so I'd better get on getting myself a copy.

I imagine there are quite a few floating around, just none from a single publisher that one could order for a whole class, which, if I recall correctly, was my professor's exact problem.

Chabrol's Les Bonnes Femmes this eve. I liked it. It moved slowly, but the ending was fantastic. I am going to try to track down a copy of Le Boucher to watch later this week, I quite like this Chabrol guy.

I was gonna post this in the dvds purchased thread, but whatever. I got a copy of A Clockwork Orange at Target today. I'm not supposed to be spending money, because, you know, bills, but whatever. I'm really happy to find that the second disc has the same feature (O Lucky Malcolm) that I enjoyed so much from O Lucky Man!. They actually had a bunch of Kubrick, so I'm quite proud of myself for buying just this one movie.

So I'm still on movie-hiatus, and really sort of avoiding the internet itself with a decent amount of success, but I still feel the need to post* that I watched the documentary Before Stonewall--it was mostly in class, showing it to my largely-unappreciative students, but it still qualifies. Such a wonderful movie, showing gay and lesbian life at midcentury.

*one time, a few months ago when I was also avoiding the internet, I failed to post about watching Blissfully Yours and thus missed my chance to impress all the Apichatpong Weerasethakul fans here. Not gonna let that happen again!
